Player Discussion Marco Rossi

I’m not advocating to trade Rossi at all at this point. The evidence is there that we shouldn’t be penciling him in as our 1C or 2C when we are trying to win a Cup. That’s not to say plug Gaudreau in just because he’s bigger, but the emphasis seems to be getting another Eriksson Ek type player. Pageau is decently sized (5’11” 195), plays penalty kill, and has won 55%+ of his draws for the past 6 seasons. He’s not a flashy center, but he makes this team better and harder to play against.
We need guys who will play big if they're not big (like Bennett or Marchand do). I haven't watched him enough, is Pageau that? If he is, maybe that's an option, but it would probably only be for this year due to his contract and age. I really do not want to see the Wild adding another 30+ year old to this roster medium term.

I think we should wait to see if Tuch shakes loose. Not sure what it would cost but that would be the best Sabres piece to go after.

I don't think Tuch becomes available until the TDL, if BUF trips over their skates again, and he hasn't re-signed yet. He's on a great contract and grew up only a couple hours from BUF. They need to make the Playoffs and he's the kind of player they can't afford to lose before the seaons starts. He might the player that has the most Playoff experiance on the team.

He should be a prority re-sign candidate for them.

He should be, you're right, but I saw speculation that he may not be interested in being there. If it takes until the TDL, so be it, but we should definitely be in on him if he becomes available. That's the piece that'll finally knock Zuccarello down the lineup, and give us another real top six threat.

I find it funny that we all generally agree on 80% of the Rossi discourse with slight variations of opinions and those slight variations have given us a lot to talk about lol

The thing in BUF I'm waiting for is Byram's contract. If it's high priced then it might open up some trade options that sound dumb to me currently.

*Wild fans see the Stanley Cup Finals and how important big strong fast 2 way centers are to winning it all*

Also Wild fans: yeah, I wanna hitch my wagon to a tiny slow one dimensional center.

I don’t care if I’m viewed as biased. The teams still playing right now literally show the blueprint on how to win the Cup. Wild fans are showing they are more interested in doing the exact opposite.
I agree with your first point. But if Yurov ends up a 40 pt C, I’d rather have Rossi than JEE, Hartman, Yurov down the middle in what is shaping up to be a very important season for this franchise.

You'd rather have Rossi than JEE? I guess I'm not in that same boat.

No, I just worded that oddly. I meant to say I’d rather have JEE + Rossi + Yurov/Hartman than just JEE + Yurov + Hartman. This is assuming we trade Rossi for a W or futures, etc and aren’t able to acquire another C of note.

I’d rather have Erickson Ek playing 3C where he now belongs. He never developed the offensive game to be a top 6 C on a contender. If you have a Barkov then Rossi is a great 2C option with Ek taking the matchups you force on home ice.

Our issue as usual is we have no 1C and we aren’t getting one his year. Keeping Rossi and making do is our best option.

If we added another elite winger we might just have enough wing talent to mask it enough to be effective

I'm with you, but it really depends on who the wing is. If it's Robertson at a reasonable rate(say, 10-11M) for Rossi and Ohgren, then I am driving the two Euros to the airport. If it's Peterka, I shrug my shoulders and let them get their own rides. Rakell, I'm rioting.

Weird thought but what about Malkin for a season? Pittsburgh is rebuilding. He might come cheap.

Doesn't sound like either Pittsburgh or Malkin are interested in trading Malkin this year. I personally think he'll go back to Russia after this season.

What? 2x20g seasons, 1x30g season, and the 19g COVID short season. This is with the strong 2-way game.

The only reason JEE would be used as a matchup center is because the other centers on the team are 1 dimensional centers and need to be sheltered.

For me, having Rossi on the roster is insurance in case Yurov isn’t ready. The team expressing the desire to obtain a duplicate version of Ek and that Yurov will start at center points to Rossi either being traded or playing the wing. Rossi playing the wing covers a lot more bases and allows for him, a quality young forward, to stay on the team.

He’s my favorite player but his ability to drive offense is zero. He wills goals into the net with his shovel.

So his 19g short season with Greenway/Foligno was just a fluke? Him being net front with the goalie screens and opening up the ice for the rest of the line doesn't matter?

For all the talk of Rossi playing with garbage this year (60p, 35p 5v5). Compare it to JEE's 22-23 season (61p, 33p 5v5).

If Rossi and Hartman aren’t adequate support behind JEE, it’s highly unlikely that a rookie C with limited experience at the position is going to fulfill Guerin’s desire to provide help down the middle.

Do you think Ek is creative offensively , simple question

Rossi doesn't drive anything offensively yet either btw. I'll say he isn't really a true line driver yet, because "doesn't drive anything offensively" makes it sound like he's purely a passenger, and he isn't. He just isn't the main driver on the line.

You're also comparing Ek's 26 year old season to Rossi's 23 year old season and I hate sounding like a broken record but people keep comparing Rossi at 23 to other guys at 26 or later to prove that those players are as good as Rossi, but compare them at 23 and Rossi is miles ahead, so what does Rossi look like at 26, 27, 28?

Ek is a good hockey player, so he's going to do things good hockey players do, but he is limited offensively, like Rossi is limited defensively at this point. If I have to choose one to play in an offensive role and one to play in a defensive role, I can make that decision easily without second thoughts.

Kaprizov - Rossi - Boldy (offensive)
Foligno - Eriksson Ek - Hartman (defensive)
Ohgren - Yurov - Zuccarello (wildcard)
