Player Discussion Marco Rossi

It’s also okay if he plays wing where he won’t be exposed as lacking in the defensive zone and faceoff department.

He’s 0/3. Move him to wing.
He's not really 0/3 because it's not a binary system of measurement, it's a spectrum.

  1. He's not good at faceoffs yet, but that's normal for young centers, and he's not the worst in the NHL at them, and he will likely improve as most young players do.
  2. Defensively he puts in effort but isn't strong enough on the puck. That's normal in young players and is a thing that will likely improve to some degree. He's at least smart enough that he gets into the right spot most of the time.
  3. I'm not sure what the third thing is and I don't care enough to look back.

The main thing is that he's already good at the hardest part of the game, and is young enough to improve enough to likely become competent at the parts of the game he isn't good at yet.

I think Rossi is a 65 point C. 20 G, 45 A. Can go higher with PP1 time, lower without. I don’t expect the SH% to continue.

The concern is that he just keeps improving and we give away a 75 PT C who doesn’t kill you in his own end.

The funny thing is that all the talk about Rossi has obscured the fact that Kaprizov’s extension is looming. Nobody is talking about that now

It has been a nice distraction. Plus kap kind of calmed the doom and gloom crowd with his end of year comments.

Well, according to some, he should be inserted as a wing without even trying him at center.

Granlund got through his age 23 season. Rossi is entering his age 24 season. Yurov should get the same.
Rossi is a far more effective center than Granlund ever was.

I have zero problem with him playing wing. You don’t have to start him at C. Mostly depends on what happens to Rossi and FA. But Hartman is better as a C than a W.

The team already stated he (Yurov) is going to start at center. Rossi playing wing opens up some avenues to go down that allow for versatility and to pay less for a “center that can help Ek.”

Our C depth is completely uncertain with FA & Rossi still undecided. If Yurov has chemistry with 97, they could easily go Kap-Rossi-Yurov or Kap-Ek-Yurov. Or we could sign a Tavares or a P.Suter (🤢). Or Yurov struggles in camp the FO decides Hartman is the 3C to start and Yurov starts on the wing. FOs say a lot of things in spring/summer that end up not happening. The most important thing is that Yurov is a capable Top 9 player. We really need either him or Ohgren to be 0.5PPG guys and add some scoring depth to the Top 9.

The team said Yurov is going to play center. Show me another team that said X player was going to play center and they did not start at center.

I’m not talking about free agency. I’m talking a pick/prospect trade for someone like Pageau.

Kaprizov was on pace to shatter his career marks with Rossi to start the season. Honest question, have you just completely forgotten, or blocked out, the first 2.5 months of last season?
Kaprizov was also on pace for 127 points next to Eriksson Ek and Boldy to end the prior season. Have you forgotten about that while you trash Eriksson Ek every chance you get to prop Rossi up?

Kaprizov is going to score regardless of who is on his line. This isn’t Rossi propping Kaprizov’s numbers up. Rossi is just a lot less limiting than Victor Rask, Sam Steel and Ryan Hartman. Is that a surprise to anyone?

Oh so Boldy was there, not Zuccarello? Did you forget that while you trash Rossi every chance you get to prop Eriksson Ek up?

Not going to spend my Sunday scouting the internet for obscure arricles. But I guarantee it’s happened. It’s even more possible given the player in question is a rookie with zero NA hockey experience. And frankly, it doesn’t matter. We don’t even know if Yurov will be good, much more concerned about that question than the question of if he starts at C. It’s a bizarre thing to harp on given all the uncertainty in the lineup

You don’t get to compare 23 year old Rossi to 26 year old Granlund, sorry

On top of that, granny was playing wing the years he put up big numbers. Pretty sure it was when granny koivu and Zucker were meshing well as a line.

Correct , granny didn’t really start to even be able to fill in acceptably as a center until well into his career. Rossi is well ahead of Granlund

Rossi wouldn't be a center at all with Yeo as the coach. He would be a terrbile fit in that center high, d-zone first system.

It's kinda all we do around here. Compare him to 26 year old Granlund, or 27 year old Ek, or 29 year old Sam Bennett.

Honestly it's a bit of a compliment right? We're comparing him to those guys and he's only 23, not even in his prime yet like the others.

It’s disingenuous at best but yes , I guess it is sort of a compliment to the player that he can be held to that standard when it comes time for him to be retained and paid.
