Player Discussion Marco Rossi

It’s cause here people treat him like he’s a ppg 2 way stud that never does anything wrong and lives under the tyranny of Hynes and Guerin. On the main boards people treat him like he’s an ant that will be squashed under any 6’ player’s boot and he only scores points because of Kaprizov. I got problems with both.

My answer for what his value, role, cost have been pretty consistent.
Value: Peterka or similar level offensive forward
Role: 2nd line winger that can flex into a center role. He’s a mini version of Ek, but slower, more offensively inclined, less defensively able, etc.
Cost: Nothing more than $7M AAV
Yeah, this is where your brain is disconnecting on this. PPG 2-way studs would be looking at $10M+ on long-term deals this summer. We're talking about Rossi getting ~$7M.

Let’s not pretend anything about Rossi’s deployment was merit based. We had a team that was icing Brazeau , Nyquist , Johansson and Fred.

Didn't Russo hint that Rossi was injured for a good chunk of the last half of the season? Nothing to put him on the IR but enough to throw him off his game.

Thanks Captain Obvious. What’s next? Gonna tell me the people on the main board don’t think he’s an actual ant too? No shit, Sherlock. Good job. 👍

In the playoffs he was garbage. What about the last two months of the season?
I don’t care enough to argue. Rossi would have been stuck with offensively inept wingers regardless of if he swapped spots with Gaudreau. The only valid point is Rossi should have gotten more ice time in the games he scored in.

There’s a report that at least one other team doesn’t want Rossi with his current contract demands. Guerin isn’t the only one that doesn’t think Rossi is worth $7M.
There was also a "report" that Guerin just didn't want to pay him more than Boldy, then another "report" later that they actually only offered 5 x $5M.

I'm talking about actual comparable player signings.

Also contract demands are a little open ended. Could be he wants a NMC and they want to give him a NTC. They could structure it as well that Minnesota has balked in the past with a bulk of it being a signing bonus.

I’m not arguing, it’s called a discussion. No need for hostility at all. You are claiming he was bad the last two months and in the playoffs. Gaudreau also was yet never lost his spot. How is that not valid? Wingers and roster construction be damned as the HC is an idiot and appears to think youth isn’t good enough to overcome aged experience…

I'm thinking about Johansson and Freddy here. I was not able to watch some of the games because of work, but the stats didn't tell me they were doing anything to help the team.

I recall Johansson being decent. Freddy Nyquist and zuc really struggled against vegas.

Normally, in a situation where the GM doesn't want to commit long term big $$ to a young player, a short term deal is worked out for a lesser amount, with the tacit understanding that at the end of said 2-3 year deal, the player will be in line for an even larger payday if he proves his worth. That's what they should be doing right now, IMO- something like a 2 x 4.5M deal.

The trouble is, here, that Rossi will feel that Hynes will marginalize his role, minimizing his future worth, because of what he did in the playoffs, playing a worse performing player above him in the lineup. Since Rossi has no arb rights, all he can do is either hold out(which would be cutting off his nose to spite his face), or sign an offer sheet.

Rossi also doesn't have to look very far to see the last skill guy Guerin wasn't fully enamored with to not get that payday after proving his worth after a bridge.

great point.

I certainly hope this isn't a thing, but I wonder if Guerin is uncomfortable with Rossi's devout practice of Christianity. BG seems to be the type of guy who would rather have his players showing up hungover, than praying before games.

Highly doubt it. If anything, I think Guerin doesn’t like that Rossi is a timid guy. He isn’t as timid on the ice, but he’s not a very aggressive player either and tends to disappear for long stretches. He does have great finishing ability and a tendency to consistently make the right play. But I think the concerns about committing a boatload of $ to a guy who may be the leagues smallest C are legitimate.

And we've finally devolved into "BG hates Christians". Good job all. It took us a while but we finally got there.

Russo said he might be but was just guessing, had no real info on it. Was trying to understand why his play had dropped off. Nothing was ever confirmed as far as I know.

Damn that Cathedral up the hill from the X… surely that’s the cause for all of this franchise’s misfortune!
