Player Discussion Marco Rossi

I still think the easiest path to foresee is Rossi for the best 2026 1st round pick they can get at the draft. Then Guerin knows for sure (and he likes certainty) how much money he has to play with on July 1.

Think a 26 1st is too far out from helping this team to be the key piece. I think its a player + prospect, with either potentially being the primary piece, think something like Newhook + Hage(main piece) or McCann(main piece) + Miettinen.

Depends. Those players cost money and if they think they can use the whole $15M wisely in free agency, it would be defensible to take the futures-equivalent of McCann or Newhook + the other piece.

I don't think it would be defensible to take a 100% futures package unless they already used the money wisely in free agency. It's not really a defensible GM move to trade a 60 point 23 year old center for futures and then whiff on all the targets you wanted to get when the team is trying to win and trying to entice the best player they've ever had to stay longer.

The order of operations is tough, admittedly, and I forget if the "tampering" period still exists or not.

Think he's probably past his prime now but it would sure be a trip down memory lane. That Brunette-Koivu-Miettinen line fed families.

Fun fact: Miettinen, a 7th round choice, ended up the highest scoring Finn from 2000 NHL Entry Draft. 97 goals and 133 assists for a total of 230 points (and 234 PIM).

He narrowly beat Petteri Nummelin (who somehow got drafted at 28 years old, go figure) for the honor. Nummelin, for the record, had 9 goals and 36 assists.

I don't see Marner or Ehlers, so there's space for Nelson alongside McCann. I'm not saying its what I want, but it is my expectation.

I think it's just not a chance you take in the position we're in
Alternatively, Rossi turned down 5 x $5M and Guerin's mindset is he's gone. Guerin decides to use the entire $15M. Rossi is still an RFA, but now Guerin can spend the summer sussing out a deal (or a Spurgeon deal), and doesn't buy into the idea that the value is tanked since you'd still have teams playing against each other.

As long as Guerin keeps Rossi on the roster until he's spent the 15M, sure.

I'm also not really sure where you're spending 15M this summer, to be honest with you. Unless you get Marner, which we won't.

I'm not saying I want it, but Bennett + Nelson for $13M. The money talks for Bennett and Nelson wants to come "home".

I'm just saying, I'm not completely crossing it off the list that a Rossi trade is a futures trade, whether we like the entire package deal or not.

Forgot about Bennett again. This is a pretty underwhelming class.

I'm not crossing a futures trade off, I just don't think you can do it until you have the replacements. I know the term fireable offense is thrown around a lot, but trading Rossi at the draft for a pick and a prospect, and then going into next season with basically this same roster minus Rossi is as close as it gets.

Not arguing that.

Nelson would be a huge mistake unless he signs for a major discount.

I for one can't wait to watch him drag his old ass around the ice for the next four years lagging behind the play and generally being a liability in the top six

The only way I see Rossi traded this summer is for one of the other RFAs. Peterka, Vilardi, Knies, Geekie, McLeod, McTavish, etc.

at what point can a team offer sheet rossi and what comp would we end up with?

July 1st

Comp isn't set yet as far as I know, but based on this season it was:

$4,580,917 - $6,871,374 = 1st, 3rd
$6,871,374 - $9,161,834 = 1st, 2nd, 3rd
$9,161,834 - $11,452,294 = 1st, 1st, 2nd, 3rd

So those dollar values will go up this summer

I agree, but that’s still a few years from being a reality. In a “win-now” mode, I think any changes to the defense (Brodin/Spurgeon) requires a NHL replacement to be brought in.

Durzi has had some good numbers in Utah/Arizona and he’s at a reasonable cap hit of $6M for another 3 seasons.

This definitely isn’t my preferred option, but it’s the one that I think makes the most sense if Guerin does decide to move either of Spurgeon or Brodin. I personally think you just keep both of them because their age and contracts fit in with the timeline of Buium and Jiricek’s development.
Durzi is not at all a Guerin type player. He has nowhere near Spurgeon's defensive abilities.

Trading Rossi for a Dman would be crazy. This team desperately needs good forwards, not Dmen.
