Player Discussion Marco Rossi

I just can't shake the 5 x $5M offer when he pacing 70 points (as far as I can deduce). That's not a "we value you" type thing. Just smells like the 3 x $6.5M offer made to Fiala.

"Yeah, you can stay if you want, but it'll be completely on our terms".
That’s usually what happens with young pending RFAs.

Not ones who put up 60+ points in their second season
That would be a really solid argument if the contract was offered after the regular season ended. It was offered sometime in the “winter.” That could be anywhere from late October to early March lol.

Just about the only time it's a justifiable offer is the first half of October...any time after that it's a solid argument.

And I wouldn't classify October as the winter anyway.

I don’t view the contract offer as insulting unless it was offered in February. It’s low. Rossi’s camp was also rumored as wanting $9M, if I remember correctly. That’s high.

Pretty normal contract negotiation.

I don't remember hearing anything about 9M.

5x5 is literally buying a UFA year at a lower AAV than he should be getting for his RFA years. It's insulting.

Something something he lost a development year so that first UFA year is technically an RFA year in my book. :sarcasm:

But on a serious note, I think a Rossi contract will get done. Something like 3-4 years at $6-6.5M.
Sign and trade maybe? If not they will have to start trusting him a bit more - if he takes another step forward. I would imagine he needs to improve the „intangibles“ in his game before they do commit to more trust. Defensive awareness, faceoffs, conditioning and probably skating even though I think conditioning factors into the skating bit. I do not expect that much more points but I do expect a more well rounded game next season if he wants to grow into an important part of the Wild roster. Going to be an interesting few weeks to be sure.

I feel like a guy with Rossi’s build and hands should be good on the dot. The short, stout guys I played against were always the hardest to win puck battles against. They had low center of gravity and often a Napoleon complex.

Like to see him improve his FOs and defensive IQ.

Won’t be sad if we trade him, as long as it’s a hockey trade. Don’t think this team should be prioritizing futures.

What kind of a message was it to put him on the 4th line in the playoffs?
I smell another Fiala situation...

I wouldn’t be opposed to moving him for a Spurgeon replacement (either RFA or a 24-28 year w/ term).

Then you trade Spurgeon for futures and go after some big UFA targets.

Order of operations is tough.
Yeah, you’d definitely need to have things lined up pretty quickly to be able to do something like this. Realistically though, there would be at least one buyer for Spurgeon or Brodin, so I don’t think it’d be that difficult.

I do think there’s some targets that make sense (Durzi in Utah or Cernak in Tampa). If Guerin is set on moving Rossi, I believe this would be my preferred option. It feels harder to move Rossi for another forward and come out ahead in the trade.

I'm not really a fan of turning Rossi or the package we gave up for Jiricek into a default 3rd pair defenseman, even if they might be an overqualified one.

Signing Bennett and Boeser are my guesses.

Kap-Ek-Boldy
Rossi-Bennett-Boeser
Ohgren-Yurov-Hartmann
Trenin-Gaedreau-Foligno

Brodin-Faber
Buium-Jiricek
Middleton-Spurgeon

Unsure if cap works but I assume he will find a way to make it work if those are who he is after. Yes that is a young second pair but I personally am fine watching them grow without being forced into a defensive roll. Let two offensively talented defenseman attempt to flourish in a somewhat sheltered roll.

Trading spurgeon makes a ton of sense though I agree. I don’t hate the player but his injury history and age are not ideal.
