Even beyond the possibility of an upset I think there is a lot of value for this organization in making the playoffs. That's important experience for a lot of young guys to say nothing of the absolutely huge emotional win it would be for players and fans alike given the circumstance the team entered this season under.

Now, you don't mortgage the farm. But I think they've played well enough this year to prove to ownership they've earned some support here for a playoff push. Buying, not selling now makes sense.

there's also the impact to the bottom line.

playoff games 1) will sell out and 2) will have significantly higher ticket prices. i'd guess each home playoff game is worth at least three regular season games' worth of gate revenue.

people talk about teams "buying" draft picks by being retaining salary in a third party. this is kind of the inverse of that, where they'd be gambling with draft capital for actual revenue in the form of playoff ticket sales.

Anthony Beauvillier could probably be had for fairly cheap. Cheap cap hit that would be easy to incorporate, trade, or bury. 11g this year. Looked decent enough in the top 6 when given time.

Not a 1:1 replacement obviously but I bet a 4th gets it done.

Kyrou signed to 8 years is predicted value of about 3 and a half firsts.

Stl receives Willander, Vancouver’s 2025 2nd, one of Columbus’ pending ufa forwards who they do not plan to continue with (small cap dump) and Columbus’ 2025 first; in total roughly equal 3 firsts and a little more.

Canucks get Kyrou to offset the loss of Miller puck carry and Boesser shot. They also get a B+ prospect from Columbus. They send out a top shelf prospect, an expiring ufa, and second round pick to get a guy signed to 8 years.

Columbus gets Boesser while spending the typical rental fee of a 1st, a B+ prospect, and a small cap dump of an expiring guy

Yes.

There is a ginormous difference in a winger who is a pending ufa and a winger who has 8 years of term.

Boesser is expiring. As that process occurs the value goes to 0. They’re effectively trading what will be 0, a 2nd and 1 prospect for 8 years of a prime winger. Or you could consider they go to market and find a rental transaction, getting a 1st, a B+ prospect, then send that to stl for Kyrou with the prospect and the second. It’s the same value exchange either way.

He is only included in this because it seems likely he would move and it seems likely they will find a replacement. I’m just cramming those two processes into one.

That’s not how that works… an unsigned rental Boeser probably goes for a 1st itself, not “0”, whatever that means. The difference between a Boeser and Kyrou is not Tom Willander. Kyrou would be nice to have but Willander is pretty close to untouchable.

I could be talked down from Willander for sure, although maybe not.

It’ll be fun to see who they get up in Canuckland.

Really hard to compete in the nhl without two sincere scoring threats inside the top 6. I bet if you made a robust list of the available options, it’s hard to argue against a guy in Kyrou who is cost controlled - signed prior to inflation cap, superlative at a small subset of nhl skills (consistently around or among leaders in puck carry/zone entries combined with 50/50 split in goals assists throughout career lightly implying a speed and playmaking skillset - Taylor Hall-esque), clean injury history, not having a bad season, is not hyper streaky or a drama queen.

If the person Vancouver finds is signing after today then they’re going to find out players are expensive now.

Framework of the deal is based on Sakic moving Duchene and capturing the third leg of the value for Colorado due to taking mostly futures and prospects as their end of the deal while the two other teams got nhlers. Ottawa/Nashville upgraded their nhlers and they paid to do so despite Turris having 2 years of term. The senators then had to pay their share too. At this time, the Turris in the deal is Boesser and he’s expiring.

Canucks should just trade Boeser to CBJ for a draft pick. No retention needed. CBJ has cap and final year of contract anyways.

Canucks then trade pick and use cap space to get a new winger. One who doesn't skate like they're in quick sand.

We are in a weird spot where this franchise needs good vibes after the past few years of controversies and suffering but we really shouldn't be buying. Yet if we give up this also gets back to the Laine comment of "Columbus is ok with losing" how would you think the fanbase would react if we start to hard sell when we are so close (though I think at this point with us with our prospect pool/cap space/talent this is just a dress rehearsal year and our true window opens next year).

This is why our fanbase is considering bringing back the Goose himself, Gustav Nyquist. Yes he's a rental but the price shouldn't be that expensive, he knows the city and honestly wanted to stay here and its the front office saying to the team "yes these injuries suck but this is down payment saying we believe in you for the future and here's a lifeline to get you through until mid March"
 
Bedard missed 14 games last year with a broken jaw.

Marchenko with a fullcage on painkillers will be a menace. Jackets must survive the next few weeks.
