Not sure what's more surprising here. You not knowing Staal has a NMC or that you can't spell his name after being part of the organization for 14 years :laugh:

Does anything think Staal retires before his contract ends? Does he make this his last season if he can't improve at all?

looking at his capfriendly page, his take-home pay was pretty level over the last several years, but it drops this year, and drops again in the last year. May be less incentive for him to try to keep sticking around.

No, his contract is six years, recapture only affects contracts seven years or longer:

For any SPC entered into prior to the execution date of this Agreement (including any binding Memorandum of Understanding) that has a term in excess of six (6) League Years ("Long-Term Contracts"), the Averaged Amount of such Long Term Contracts shall be calculated and included in a Club's Averaged Club Salary in accordance with Section 50.5(d)(ii) above so long as the Player is playing or is injured and is being paid pursuant to his SPC.

50.5(d)(ii) is where they get into recapture.

How about we go with, one has a function for the coaching staff and one does not? One means something to the franchise and one does not? Again, let's try to work within the basis of reality, shall we?

Rangers gave Marc Staal more defensive zone starts than any other player and he led the team in penalty kill time. He plays a lot of his minutes against top 6 opposing forwards. Like it or not that is a role. We can argue that he's not all that great in his role but at the same time looking at the other LD that we have the only one who's proven better at it is Brady Skjei. Maybe that changes this year--with Hajek or Lindgren with a year pro under their belts now and Rykov coming in from the KHL.

a role he gets his black blown out in.

we can wax on about how much he plays but he universally spends it getting wrecked by a whole spectrum of skillsets.
 
Ah, people still think that just because a player plays a large amount of time, that means they are good at it and/or no one else can do those minutes.

the fact that there still exists a brigade of people willing to defend someone as visually horrid as Marc Staal really confirms that hockey fans will defend literally anybody that's not talented.

He was horrible no matter who he was playing against. Top six, bottom six, it didn’t matter.

You're bring too quick to jump the gun here. Someone with a little clout had to pick the restaurants on away days after Tanner departed. Do we know 18 isn't a fine dining and gastronomic expert? Could be another potential string to his whatsit :sarcasm:
