Marc Staal

You need to watch the game Chief. You can't compare Staal to other #1 defensemen in the league. You'd really compare him to Chara, Karlsson, Weber, or Suter? Too many mistakes. If I had one life raft and both McD and Staal were in the river, I'd save McD

You just listed 4 guys. Staal is not a top 4 D-man? Stop the press! Suter has struggled earlier this year btw. The guy makes mistakes too. Staal makes more mistakes than McDonagh though and that's why I prefer him.

I've watched Suter the past few games, and he made alot of mistakes, so he's not a #1 dman.:sarcasm:

What is your point? Because he's not better than 4 or 5 guys he's not a #1 defenseman?

We're supposed to be a Cup contending team this year. If you compare him to other #1 Defensemen on top teams, he doesn't compare. I've never said he's a bad defenseman, though he often gets a pass for costly mistakes by Rangers fans. McD will develop into a much better defenseman than Staal will ever be

Well considering the McD crapped the bed tonight, and Girardi was pretty awful late in the game. That runner up Dman was an absolute rock on the back end in the game...

He certainly compares defensively. Karlsson is a 1D because of his offense, not because he's good defensively. Marc Staal is a SHUTDOWN defenseman. Any points from him is gravy.

he also makes more mistakes than your average "Top D man"

Can you prove that?

Fact: McD averages more giveaways per game than Staal.

That's only true in certain senses. Points aren't just gravy. The guy isn't perfect, he will make defensive mistakes. And for him to contribute at least neutrally to our team, he needs to balance out those mistakes on defense with offensive chances.

He was extremely involved in the offense today.

OK, maybe I exaggerated when I said that. We certainly expect him to put up more points than Stu Pickles. That being said, his offensive game has been very improved this season, and I think, will continue to get better. Everyone will make defensive mistakes. McD probably made 5 big ones today, it happens. Oh, plus this:

I actually like Staal's offensive game a lot, I wish Torts would use him on the powerplay occasionally. McD is more consistent in the defensive zone, tonight was a rare off-night for him
