Staal is one of the top 3 defensive defensemen in the league when he's on. He's certainly playing at that level right now.

Staal is a force out there right now, best hockey of his career...our top 4 dmen rival any top 4 in the league, Klein has done a nice job stabilizing john Moore

He's playing the best hockey of his career. Gives you an idea how good McDonagh really is.

couldnt agree more.. dudes been awesome and we're extremely lucky.. this past 2-3 months our team defense as a whole has been amazing as well..

lundqvist has been awesome too, making key saves, but i think this is the first time he hasnt had to stand on his head and save the rangers *****, which is such a good feeling..

its pretty wild, i think we could all agree when was the last time you saw a ranger team bee this potent on offense, and play a complete dominating game??

even the 2011-12 team's best games didnt have this much scoring and the depth scoring is second to none right now..

I don't think this is the best hockey of his career, which is scary considering how on he's been. That goes right before the stretch run in 2011 or the start of the 2013 season before the eye injury. That's when I had hopes that he could be a Pronger-like presence on the backend.

If Marc Staal keeps regaining his confidence with the puck, he will be better than his best stretch in 2011.

He's already showing signs, his two brilliant passes against the Isles, his step up pass to Callahan where Varlamov had to make a huge save. He's shooting more, and looking to make the pass more than just dump. I love it.

He has been awesome. I wouldn't doubt it if switching to a visor took a little for both Girardi and Staal to adjust too, especially Staal because of always missing games every so often.

BTW, I have crow to eat. I remember when I read that Staal was close to coming back in the injury thread and said "am I the only one not excited?" He was really bad. I don't know why he started playing so much better AFTER a concussion.

Me too.

I was more than ready to ship him off for one of Carolina's forwards and a draft pick and laughing at Rutherford for getting fleeced.

Seems like he's come back stronger than he's ever been. If he keeps this up, certainly don't want to see him leaving.

Also, congrats to him and his wife on the birth of their daughter.

Staal is not becoming captain if he doesn't sign an extension. The Rangers will be in the same spot next February with Staal if he doesn't sign here.

I think he will sign an extension. I think we go with 3 As for the rest of the year, Staal re-signs in the summer, and then gets the C.

Staal is one of my favorite players, I always had faith he could regain his pre-injury form. Faith or wishful thinking? Same thing really ;)

Getting him re-signed this summer should be a priority IMO, get it done before another situation like Girardi and Callahan happens.

Now it may always be that he won't want to re-sign in the summer or may want way too much money or something...it's not always just like snapping your fingers and it's done, but you also really dont' want to let a player like Staal get away if you can afford it

There's a reason he's my favorite player!

Injuries derailed a guy that was well on his way to becoming a 40 point and THE best defensive defenseman in the league.

The only person that has the reach, size, smarts, strength and skating ability to dominate in the defensive zone like Staal is Chara.

He's not where he was pre-Eric Staal concussion, but I'm glad to see the eye injury isn't holding him back.

Our D right now as a group is as solid as ever....

everything is clicking... and Staal has been great.

Keep it rollin'

Marc Staal has been absolutely brilliant since he returned from his concussion. I can't say that enough.

Staal-Stralman have been dominating other teams. They played a flawless game tonight. Both of them.

Resign them both, please.

I read a post the other day suggesting Stralman should be dealt for a 2nd or 3rd rounder at the deadline. Couldn't help but be thoroughly confused. The value of that second pairing cannot be overstated.

I want both of them back in blue.

Agree.

As good as Staalsy has played I tend to think he's not quite on 2011 level. Not far from it however.

On HF by a Rangers fan? A 2nd or 3rd pick for a very solid top 4 D-man for a team in the playoff hunt? Chances that pick ever becomes as good as Stralman is probably incredibly low.

Lets see him put his John Hancock on a contract with the Rangers in July on the first day of the new fiscal year.

Staal is a solid player, I'm sure there was an adjustment time with the vision but he seems to be hitting on all 8 cylinders now. Glad to see it.

Staal should be an Olympian. No way Hamhuis and MEV are better players.

Everyone on the Rangers is playing well right now.

Marc is playing great; he and McD are a two-headed monster on the left side. We are now equipped to shut down any top offensive team. And having a solid veteran like Klein on the 3rd pair is a great luxury which I think everyone agrees has translated into better play out of J. Moore. We will have bad games but I would not want to face this team in the playoffs, even if I am Pitt or Boston.

Honestly I wouldn't have chosen him if I was on the selection committee either. By the time the final decision was made Staal was still struggling.
