And Fasching too a couple years ago. Still worth it to bring him back and give him a shotPerhaps we have a diamond in the rough here, though most of us thought the same about Maclean.
when called up figured he would be nice story as Fasching and Mac....but so far i am really impressed much more with everything you touched on...and yes, if he can evolve into a PK'er, well that would make him at the very least a great 4th liner for us. Suppose next season we will see.Addressing the issue of being happy with Fasching and MacLean before, when discussing Gatcomb . . .
Fasching was a low-level UFA signing and is already 29 years old and Maclean spent 3 1/2 years at Bridgeport before making the leap. They maxed out their abilities and it got them a look when we needed to cycle in 4th liners as our Identity Line lost their effectiveness. But neither has shown anything more than mid-level 4th-liner, at best.
Gatcomb has an NHL IQ in how he plays. He makes the smart decision with the puck almost all the time. Chips it in when it makes sense, his hits don't take him out of position because he wants to plaster someone, he drives the net without the puck and he's aware of filling space in the defensive zone.
He's not flashy, but he's the type of player who will score when it matters. He's a +1 and outside of his fighting major, he has taken 3 minors in 33 games. Not a big shot blocker (17) but has 122 hits in the 33 games and only 10 giveaways. Those are all stats of an experienced player, not one in his first 33 NHL games.
He came on my radar in the last exhibition game against the Rangers. He didn't make mistakes and he had a few offensive plays that screamed IQ. We've seen some of that the entire time he's played here. @Chapin Landvogt and I discussed him off-line pretty much right away and he saw it too.
This is a VERY smart player who hits, will not hurt you defensively and if he chips in 10 goals a season, is the perfect fit for a 4th-liner that you win with. If he gives you 15 goals, you are getting a massive upgrade for our 4th line.
Gatcomb is shooting at 26%. He’s not an everyday NHL player. He will go the way of Fasching and Maclean soon enough.Addressing the issue of being happy with Fasching and MacLean before, when discussing Gatcomb . . .
