No thanks if it's going to be a late third for Kovy. I would rather keep him on Suzuki's wing and maybe resign him.
Id be heavily surprised if Kovalchuk did not sign with the habs to get some chance to showcase himself to be traded at the deadline for a chance for the cup.
Maybe we can resign him at 1st July but keeping him for a non playoff run is absolutely stupid.

It's not stupid. It's about giving Suzuki a linemates to work with to end the year instead of f***ing Weal or Cousins. It gives Suzuki a chance to get points potentially every game.

I'm not confident this team will finish low enough whatever MBs does.

Suzuki wont be playing with Cousins or Thompson or Weal with Drouin back. Let's not inject 6m into another 37 year olds after he got bought back 3 months ago. If he really loves Montreal he will sign back July 1st. Kovalchuk did not comeback in the NHL for money , he wants the cup not babysitting Suzuki. He signed in L.A because he was expecting them to do good and not go into a rebuild.

I agree that Kovalchuk is fun to watch but he's not the reason that will make Suzuki into a great nhler. Suzuki was already doing really well before Kovalchuk Joining. It's simple we need elite talent. We never have elite talent.

You don't keep him for a non-playoff run, you keep him so that he can help mentor some of the young guys like Suzuki/Kotkaniemi. You keep him so that they can play with a offensively gifted player because doing so helps their development. And quite frankly unless we are getting a high end prospect or 1st round pick, the development of Suzuki/Kotkaniemi is way more important.

That said I do think there probably was some sort of agreement/understanding before he signed with us, if so we should honour that, so we will likely trade him.

And now he's doing even better. You don't see how theyve clicked ? How much more space and chances Suzuki gets ? That's what surrounding your young players looks like. The f*** is a third round pick going to do ? The argument here is trading Kovy will improve the draft odds. Or that he had a verbal agreement with MB. That's it.

You have to balance whether keeping him will significantly alter where we end up and whether having a guy to help your best prospect represents more value than the spots lost at the draft, if any. You could even offset that draft position loss by trading other pieces.

But the third round pick is basically shit.

Yeah because Kovalchuk clearly accepted a discount sign after 2 months because nobody in the nhl wanted him because he wanted to help the kids in Montreal grow. Im not buying this shit at all. What's gonna happen if Kovalchuk go dry for 5-6 games in a row? He wont be scoring 40 goals till the end of the season. He's on a boost right now.

Then resign him at July 1st at a good price if not move on. Suzuki is not a Kovalchuk away to be a bust. Hes 50000% ahead Of Kotkaniemi Mete Poehling and Fleury. They could always play Suzuki with Gallagher. It's not the end of the world.

Who's saying the alternative is Suzuki's going to bust ? It's about optimizing his development. The third round pick is worthless. If Kovy dries up, great ! Better draft position.

Unless they had a verbal agreement, that kind of return isn't worth it.

Maybe he accepted the deal because no other team actually offered him one and he'd rather play in the NHL then sit at home?

Kovalchuk is still elite talent, shot-wise. Why not let Suzie develop alongside elite talent?

Who said i did not watn him to play with Kovalchuk.

I said that Kovalchuk signed with the habs to have a chance to redeem himself and get some value going on for a playoff team to get a chance to win the cup.

Why would habs throw away a 2nd or 3rd pick for free if somebody wants Kovalchuk at this price. We could always give a 1 year deal july 1st to comeback , nothing wrong about that. Suzuki not playing with Kovalchuk for 22 games will not break his career.
