No doubt, and Man can it get cold in your knick of the woods... acrylics' probably a safer bet than wool anyway, holds its shape & color a lot better, and geez, $20?!.
My next one will likely be even cheaper than that. I have gold left over from my Bruins sweater, and lots of off-white laying around. I bought two things of navy blue from the Zellers clearout, so there's probably more like $10 of yarn going into it, plus maybe $3 worth of felt, glue, and thread.
Youd' drop $300-$400+ if you went to one of those one-off manufacturers easily.
Oh, absolutely. I considered doing that at one point, but if I actually work at it, I can do one a month (that's how long the Shamrocks and Silver Kings sweaters took). If I were to have them made, I'd only get one every year or two. Besides that, there are current hockey jerseys that I want, and I'd probably buy those first.
I've only made three (and 3/4) so far, because I got married last summer, and I didn't have much time to knit.
You should get one of those knitting machines, get licensed from the NHL or just concentrate on defunct 19th century teams & wholesale them to high end shops, on-line. Id spend $400 for a Thistles or a Hamilton Tigers "sweater". Those mass produced "vintage" numbers from CCM of a decade or more ago were going for $125-$200, still see them in shops, but your stuffs beyond that.
I've considered doing that. I wonder how much it would cost to get licensed by the NHL...
If I were to sell these, I would need to sell them for $800-$1000 to make it worth my while, but if I got a knitting machine, I could bring that cost right down.
Making the crests only takes me an hour or two (depending on the complexity), and it isn't that hard. I cut everything out by hand too. I use a small pair of scissors, and a rotor cutter (think razor blade pizza wheel) for longer, straight lines.
I'm going to make the Maple Leafs crest soon, and I think I might make my Festivals crest at the same time. I'll take pictures of the process and post them.
