Maple Leafs grant Islanders permission to speak to Brendan Shanahan (upd: released by Leafs)

If they are announcing this now, it HAS to be connected to the isles immediate need for a GM / president of hockey ops, no?

Otherwise wouldn't the leafs just allow the contract to expire May 30th?

Maybe I am overthinking things

You are overthinking things. Their season just ended, they have to decide what direction to go in advance of the draft and free agency. Doesn't make sense to drag him along if they have no intention of extending. They are also doing him a solid so he can go interview for other positions. They'd likely do this even if the Isles position wasn't there, and now they can talk to candidates if they want to fill the same position.

It's June 30 BTW.

Yes - You're overthinking things.

Unlike the Isles who are still letting Lou use the coffee machine, the Leafs are saying, "We don't want Shanahan doing anything else here." They're putting a line in the sand and letting everyone know they're looking for new leadership.

That said it does free up Shanahan to go anywhere he wants. Maybe if he signs with the Isles in the next week, the Leafs will even get a refund on his last month of salary.

My mistake

Wasn’t Lou Lam the GM in TO when Mathew’s, Marner, and Nylander were drafted? They he got pushed out by Shamaplan for Dubass. Lou went to the Island and won 7 playoff rounds while the Leafs won two.
By all measures Lou was building a winner in TO, got pushed out and went and won on the Island.
LL publicly endorsed Dubas going so far that it was if not when and if not Toronto, elsewhere (and soon) where Dubas would be a GM.

Tough to say whether all of it was LL doing because he knew he was heading back to the States or because he was summarily pushed out per se.

How is it Shanahans fault? Dubas was decent hire at the time and his knowledge of analytics. He did the rebuild pretty damn well and got 3 franchise players.

At some point, you have to blame the players themselves.

The amount of people who don't understand the role of ownership and the front office in team building is staggering.

I guess when the Florida Panthers won the Cup last year it was all the players. Thank god they all decided to get drafted in the order they did, and traded to the same place, so they could play together to create a championship team. Great job players!

I really don't get how teams keeping going for trash retreads like Holland, Bergevin, Shanny etc. I would be trying to poach people from Dallas or Florida's management. What they've done the last couple of years is outstanding

Chris Johnston said it yesterday in his article...

"The hockey world is not exactly brimming with experienced high-end management talent, and arguably no one currently available has a stronger resume than Shanahan. Already a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame as a player, the 56-year-old spent five years in the NHL’s head office, rising to the position of the league’s senior vice president, before arriving in Toronto."

If there were more young/talented executives in NHL front offices you'd see more change and less recycling. Sadly there are not.

If it's true that he said x or y player can't be traded, admittedly that's all speculation, the blame is well placed.

What has Shanahan ever done, besides claiming to be a genius and whining during the first lockout, to demonstrate he's anything but another dumbass dead-eyed hockey player ?
