Managerial Thread - 24/25 Season - Lolst Ham United

No one's buying that.
Everybody was a Man United fan with EtH at the wheel. How could one not be?

Does this bloke know what he's getting himself into?

Bruno Fernandes picking the manager. What could go wrong?
To be fair, he played Arsenal very well the times we fought his club in Europe/CL. I am not sure if this is a good or bad hire, but he seems like he has a sharper mind than EtH.

Seeing a number of people say that one of the reasons Liverpool ultimately didn't go with him was that he's basically 100% set on playing a back 3 all the time and the rest of the Liverpool footballing setup wasn't sold on that being the best formation either for their current squad or for recruitment moving forward.

If true and he's is insistent on implementing a back 3 at United, it could get worse before it gets better. If they're healthy I think they have the CBs to play a decent back 3 (Yoro- De Ligt - Martinez seems pretty balanced) but they're severely lacking a real wing back. I think Shaw could do great in that role since he's a great player overall and very versatile, but he can't remotely be counted on to be healthy.

I think Dalot and any of Shaw/Malacia are a lot better suited as wing backs than they are as fullbacks.

I suppose it depends on how far you’re extending “one of”

If you mean somewhere in the 5-10 range of world jobs, then yea. If you mean top 2-3, then it absolutely isn’t.

Looking at the managers they've landed since ferguson...is it?
To be fair, it’s probably the best job that’s available right now or will be available in the next month or so. It’s been a shit show, but you’ll get paid a ton and they’ll likely give you two or three seasons if you demand that.

Eh, I'd rather replace Kompany or Sahin.

Yeah. I guess. But you think he’s the only horse for those two jobs? I think he has a decent shot but bird in hand for one of the better jobs that’s currently open.

Mourinho was still one of the biggest managerial names around when he went to Man U. His time at Chelsea ended poorly, but a dominant league win and a very good UCL run meant his reputation was still basically up there (albeit with a bigger awareness about his expiry date). It was seen as a statement hire when it was made.

When Chelsea were putting together their managerial shortlist, I did not want Anorim at all. Found him very underwhelming.

The other rumor is that he was extremely aggressive in wanting certain transfers and to be involved in that process. When your owners are cheap and the narrative now is that the squad Slot has inherited is already very good and what any new manager should be glad to start with, you can see how they soured on him. He also apparently started taking interviews with West Ham to try and force Liverpool's hand, which they did not care for.

The paycheque for replacing ETH is probably 4x the paycheque for replacing Sahin, and any serious candidate for the United job is also thinking about the likelihood of getting sacked (and, ergo, the size of the payout while you sit and think about your next project).

They’re likely not thinking much about ‘the project’ when the pay gulf is that big.

Or maybe the guys picking the manager know more than we think

Where did you get me criticizing them for their hiring decision? I just provided rumored reasons why they did not go with Amorim.

I mean, sure the formation likely played a part. But all the factors considered were what led the people in charge to make a good choice

Fair but that reputation hit can bury you if you’re not already proven...there's a reason Klopp & Nagelsmann weren't interested, despite ManU's ability to offer more than Liverpool & Leipzig (respectively).

Part of me doesn’t think Amorim should take the job, but I can’t see how he wouldn’t. I just don’t think his formation with Sporting will work at United right now.
