I don't know what West Ham were doing with Lopetegui. Is it because his wikipedia page says "Real Madrid" and "Spanish national team" on it? Deeply uninspiring at Wolves, very unlikely to win over a support who expect as much as they do. I didn't get it then, I don't get it now. The laptop nerd with the terrible hair is a much better choice, as long as the senior players don't start calling him names in a groupchat.

The sad answer is yes but even the national team appointment felt weird and only didn't spontaneously combust because it's the f***ing Spanish national team

It wasn't spontaneous, but it sure as hell did combust. Recall that he was sacked while already in Russia for the tournament because he just couldn't wait to announce he was leaving to coach Real Madrid.

Not sure if Mourinho was seriously on the table considering the new owners and his time at Roma. Would be hilarious to see Mourinho end up there, but I doubt he has the time with his moaning in Turkey.

The Everton fanbase convinced themselves they were getting Mourinho, so it’s going to be very funny if they don’t

Oh right, because of the way the two jobs were listed I got it backwards. Anyways, haven't ever seen him do anything special but just goes to show, once you get on that carousel you can ride it for a good long time. West Ham could really decide whether Potter's on it or not

Everton would be a downgrade for Mourinho even at this stage of his career. He'd rescue them from relegation this year, finish 9th the next season and everyone will have had enough of him by new years 2028

He took Wolves in a relegation battle and got them up the table looking good. He didn't leave that post for performance reasons, he fell out with ownership. Plus, obviously his record at Sevilla. I was more lukewarm on him than anything, but to say he had no track record at isn't accurate.

Real journalists are saying this rumour was total horseshit

It’s true, although Wolves fans I know were happy to see the back of him.

His managerial hire seemed to mirror West Ham’s transfer business: look like you’ve “won the transfer window” because of the cred that comes with name caché, while signing/hiring actually pretty mediocrely.

Unclear what level of blame goes where in the triumverate of Steidten/Sullivan/Lopetegui on the transfer business, but I'm leaning ultimately the hammer falls on Steidten. Already rumors that he's on thin ice too. And he came highly regarded on the continent. On the manager though, the reporting was Steidten wanted Amorim but Sullivan didn't want to pay his release clause.

There's no question Lopetegui had a hand in it too, but the summer business was just terrible. No way you can make all those moves and end up with no midfield.

People can cut however they want, but Lopetegui was backed more than Moyes ever was and as I said at the time he wouldn't do any better, and he didn’t. Can’t understand why a top club would go anywhere near Lopetegui.

Not really true. They spent more two years ago under Moyes than this past summer. The fact is, Moyes was well-supported in the market too, often winning tug-of-wars between him and Steidten. Money hasn't been a problem with West Ham, it's how they've spent most of it.

I found the rumor hard to believe anyway. Imagine settling to help Everton stop flirting with relegation for the next 2 years when its not impossible that Newcastle United will have a job opening 1 year tomorrow if they're in like 14th place. There are few men I respect more than Eddie Howe and I hope he keeps that station for years to come. But if he fails, Mourinho makes so much sense to me

True, but if you average out the seasons it’s essentially 55 a million for Moyes (second term) and 100 million for Lopetegui. That’s what I’m referring to. Notable difference there.

Agreed on how it’s been spent.

This just reminded me how grateful I am that Newcastle didn't fire Howe & go hard for Nagelsmann before the DFB was able to snatch him. 🙏

Very disappointing that Moyes is going back to The Ev. They've been circling the drain for years. Call it a day and get them f***ing flushed.

JL seems like somebody who should be the director of football instead of a manager. I still think WHU crushed it in the transfer window, it's just he isn't good at all as a coach.
