Rumor: Mammoth looking to make some noise

Well yeah, they've got like $21M in cap space with a nearly full roster and an owner that just spent $1.2B to pay for the least valuable franchise in the league.

He's gonna want to jump start his investment.
Here’s a nice jumpstart . Mat Barzal for your pick

Islanders are years away from being a contender and trending downward . Keeping him will only delay or cancel out the chance to build through the draft to be great one day instead of a bottom 15 team each year

Not sure why they would even entertain offers for McBain. Big boy is hitting machine with a shot, versatility and two-way IQ. He’s literally everything a contending team needs in the playoffs and a team graduating from “cute rebuild” to “serious team” needs to keep.

I suspect he will be locked down to a contract that may surprise people if they are just looking at points. If some team wanted to trade for him, the cost would be very high...and like teams like Buffalo and a few others, more picks and prospects are pretty useless to Utah. So, unless he is part of a package for a big star, I don't see it...other teams can be interested all they want.

The same reason McLeod became a sabre and wasn’t traded for fair value.

If you lock up two young centers then your third young center will want to go be a top 6 center on another team and make 5x the career $.

What icetime can the Utahns offer McBain? checking icetime.

Between Schmaltz, Keller, Guenther, Cooley, Doan, and Hayton you’ve got a lot committed. Hard to tell a 25 year old center that you can’t find him more icetime when you may have some offer sheet team with a vacancy at the center position; that also may give him a fat raise similar to the multi million dollar hike Broberg got.

If you’re Utah - you can wait to see what the deal looks like and match it - giving the guy an unnatural raise - but the term could send the dude to ufa - and that feels like it would be hard to match. I would be a bit sour if somebody offersheeted my guy and sent him straight to ufa. It seems kinda obvious that’s what would happen so I’d probably just deal the guy first. Or deal one of the centers above him.

I think they should trade with the Islanders considering I believe the Mammoth could make better use of Schaefer and The Islanders and Hagens are a match made in heaven.

Just trade the number 4 to the Islanders for Barzal so I have something interesting to watch on draft day. My Kings aren’t picking till the 24th pick and it sounds like it might be moved back to gain more picks which bores me. Hoping Utah does something exciting on draft day.

It’s a win-win for Utah fans as even if they end up with a hell of a prospect.

Very cool team name by the way.

I'm torn on whether or not they should use the 4ov to get a good player. If you get Martone, he's gonna be a good player for you for 10+ seasons. And they still have a ton of youth. So it's not like it's a team of 29yos with a closing window.

I'd try to sign Marner and one of Ehlers or Boeser. Trade someone like Schmaltz out and see if you can get a solid 3C in return.

This is how I image the team looking in the longer term...

Keller - Cooley - Guenther
Iginla - (Desnoyers/Frondell) - But
(McBain/Hayton) - Beaudoin - Doan

Sergachev - Kesselring
Simashev - Durzi
Duda - Lamoureux

Vejmelka / Hrabal

This leaves Schmaltz, Crouse, Maccelli, Marino, Maatta, Ingram and definitely Kerfoot, Cole as guys that won't be there in 3 years.

If you can find a way to trade Schmaltz or Crouse out and bring in a stop-gap 2C, that might be a good idea. It doesn't have to be some rock solid 2C that's gonna solidy your top 6 for a decade. Just somebody who can do a good job until the center they draft 4th overall is ready. If they draft Martone, the plan shifts and they might want to pursue the elusive rock solid 2C.

I'm pretty sure 4OA of this draft isn't enough to get Barzal.

Whether that's true or not, Desnoyers and Hagens will probably be just as good as Barzal if not better, if developed properly. Possibly Martone and Frondell too (opinions vary obviously). Utah would be smart to take the equally good but younger cheaper player, provided that they're confident that they can develop him.

If you can't get fair trade value for the 18 year old kid with the bright future, simply keep the kid and develop him.

This probably isn't very probable, I'd say.

Utah also has three 2nd rounders in this draft....

Kesselring + 46th overall for Rasmus Andersson

Crouse + Maccelli + 4th overall for Robertson

Keller - Cooley - Guenther
Robertson - Hayton - Schmaltz
But - McBain - Doan
Kerfoot - Stenlund - ???

Sergachev - Andersson
Simashev - Durzi
Maatta - Marino

That's a playoff team.

I guess it's a matter of opinion. Barzal at his peak is/was a weak 1C / strong 2C. I think both Desnoyers and Hagens have that potential. We're not talking about a Larkin / Aho / Hintz level player here.

At his peak he was a PPG player, which isn't that weak actually. And if he had someone like TK and Michkov as his wingers, he would have been a PPG+ player, I wouldn't mind if Flyers get him. And yes, I'd prefer him over Aho or Hintz.

Utah shouldn't make either of those trades. Bad value and they should be keeping Kesselring and the 4th overall.

If they really want to trade a high-end piece for Rasmus Andersson, which I personally would not, then maybe 2026 UTA 1st or But or Beaudoin make more sense. Simashev is a maybe, it really depends what Utah thinks of his upside.

Robertson or a premium left winger is a non-starter IMO, as Tij Iginla is probably only 1 more year away. It's not like Utah is going to be a cup favourite in 25-26, so waiting one year for Iginla is the reasonable way to go IMO. Maybe sign Beauvillier for 1 year or something, I don't know. Trade Maccelli plus for the last year of Anders Lee's contract.
