People complaining about not signing 50 point players to long term contracts. Meanwhile Malkin will outperform everyone not named Kadri or Gaudreau. Depending on where Kadri lands he might out produce him as well.

I feel like a Ron Hextall tell-all book about his time in the Pens FO would be one page that just said "I might have worked there at some point, maybe. I don't know."
"I could tell you, but I've have to chase you around the rink with a hockey stick. and I'm too old for that"
What if Malkin wasn’t whiny or didn’t play hardball at all and we just have the worst reporters in the league?
The Malkin is going to UFA report was from Dreger.

Sure but the overwrought stories surrounding it largely were not AFAIK.

All I know is I've already noticed a diva narrative, now. And that's f***in dumb for a guy that just took a like 3.5M dollar haircut. But I mean whatever people attach weird nonsense to this guy all the time so nothing new.

Nah, just from a guy Geno's picked to do his biography, and who got the access to do the big story about Geno's bounce-back off-season in 2019, and so on. :naughty:

Which ain't to say it's necessarily right... but if Geno doesn't like those stories, he can stop those stories super easy barely an inconvenience.

In any case, we'll never know the full truth. It's pretty fair to say though that a guy who signs the night before FA is playing hardball - that is about as factual as it gets - and the most close to fact example of possible whininess we've got is pulling out of negotiations. Which is frankly whinier than any of the stories for my money. I don't care how much a guy emotes in his spare time, but withdrawing from negotiations, an action with real consequences?

Actually I lied, I don't care if that's whiny either. The process is nowhere as important as the final result. But if people do want to exonerate him, then there's a whole slew of stuff and leaks and what not to half the hockey media in North America. Trying to rubbish the Rossi stuff is like taking a cake, claiming its very unhealthy, so proceeding to eat all the buttercream at very best.

I guess what I am saying is that I'm sure he got upset and basically was of the opinion that THEY could sweat it out for a night. And I have no doubt Malkin has pride and an ego. He is where he is in no small part to those things. But when people start characterizing it as like "whiny" or whatever I'm absolutely going to roll my eyes.

I'm sure those people have never once had an emotional response to something. Silly fellow humans!

Like you said the eventual results are what matter.

In which case we see eye to eye.

Hextall wasn’t sweating it out.

If he had to tell the truth to the media about signing Malkin, it would look like this:

I’m pretty sure JP Barry just cut out the middleman and asked Rossi for his Twitter password.

I think you’re support of this now farewell tour is ridiculous.

As a season ticket holder I care about winning not “legacy building”. The front of tge jersey is more important than the back.

This attitude keeping the band together is easier said when you’re not financially invested.
You could always turn in your upper deck (heehee) seats for a couple of years.

We didn't get further away either. Put all the emotions aside and Geno is a ppg player. He was the key component on our PP, had strong possession metrics and wasn't entirely to blame for those not converting to the scoresheet, and ended the playoffs with a sturdy 6 in 7 and plus 6 at 5v5. The biggest problems with last season weren't much to do with Geno. There are blemishes in the record too but you're never finding a 2C at 6m that brings that upside. Maybe there was a path through shifting the team's emphasis, maybe it would be safer considering age and injuries, but you're just not finding that upside.

People who want to see this team get closer to a cup need to collect blackmail material on NHL GMs so we can trade Pettersson/Zucker easily, give Carter (and some others) the elixir of youth, and find a way to reboot Jarry to his best fittest self at the start of each playoff. That gets us closer far quicker than debating the right 2C.
Bro I’m not sure where you get he was a positive force in the playoffs. He was invisible. Maintaining status quo delivered 4 seasons of first round exits. There’s no evidence that will change. Aging teams don’t regenerate, they fall hard.

Here’s one thing to maybe make you smile. Those on here who advocated for this have no right to bitch & moan when, not if, the wheels fall off.

This Malkin contract will end horribly and taint his legacy.

Trust me, I get the repercussions. I also know fans will turn on Malkin as he keeps aging out.

It’s the whole “careful what you wish for” scenario.

It was definitely time to move on and be big boys, but this is the cost of three cups.

No, it didn’t have to happen and common sense should have won out, but for now a majority of Pens/Malkin fans are happy.

Let them be happy, life’s too short.
I think this is reductionistic.

6.1 million doesn’t buy you a lot at center and beyond being the emotional move, it just makes sense for the team. Malkin will likely age out but he’s not gonna age like milk, he’s a generational player. Those guys are usually still better-than-replacement level well into their early 40’s.

Yeah, I think Hextall just doesn't let anyone know how things went down. He was asked later about when things picked back up with Malkin, and he basically ignored the question with a non-answer. Almost every GM in the league would have provided at least a few details, even something generic. "We never really stopped talking. There was just a little reset and then we worked over a few hours Tuesday afternoon and got to where everyone was comfortable."

Hextall won't even give that. Dude is just locked down.

This is a discussion that can be had in a year or two.

Again, I’m going to let people enjoy getting what they hoped for and keep negativity out of this thread.
