It's all about the writing.

If it becomes a "greatest hits" or "Fan Service" it'll be useless. Same if they try and deconstruct Malcom and make him incompetent.

Both are the most likely scenarios as well as constant winks to the audience whether Breaking Bad references and cameos or somehow working in Muniz's car racing.

Best case is an actual decent story on where he is as an adult and some challenges as a parent yet not making him this remorseful and broken man (India Jones, Picard, etc.).

Visually, sure. But Erik Per Sullivan had fantastic comedic sense, especially as a young kid.

Bummer he won’t be back but of course his choice should be respected. Child acting has so many awful stories. Hopefully it’s just a matter of changing interests and not a case where his experience doing the show was miserable. He’ll be missed.
