Hi there!

Can you think of any players that made the team at 18 and who was cut the year after?

Recently, it has happened to Chris Bigras and Ian White, tough I think White was hurt at 19. Anyone can confirm or has other name to throw?

Thanks!

USA's done it a few times lately.

Alex DeBrincat and Alex Tuch recently.

Bobby Ryan back in 07.

I think Russia's a few times too- Valentin Zykov and Daniil Zharkov IIRC

These are some Canadians who were cut the year after making the team:

Chris Bigras (2015)

Leland Irving (2008)

Ian White (2004) This case is a little different as White was coming off an injury. He attended camp though and was expected to be healthy enough to play by the time the tournament came around.

Ric Jackman (1998)

Reggie Savage (1990)

I never noticed other instances, but there may be some out there. I am sure that there are examples from other countries.

Oddly, from taking a quick look at the Hockey Canada website for the 1990 and 1998 tournaments it doesn't appear that Jackman or Savage were even invited to the selection camps those years. Particularly, Savage would have been a strange omission in 1990 as he was a high (15th overall) draft pick in 1988 and had an impressive tournament in 1989. He played a full season in Victoriaville so it doesn't appear to be injury related. The 1990 team was really good, though, and one could argue that Savage's style of play wouldn't have meshed well in a forward group with an abundance of grinders and speedy defensive players. Chyzowski was relied upon to carry the load offensively. Actually, its interesting that the QMJHL had only one skater on that 1990 team - Patrice Brisebois.

There was talk of Savage having a bad attitude as a player. It might be something to do with that. His season in the QMJHL appears to have been good, not great, but you would think that as a returning player who was Canada's second leading scorer he would need to play himself off the team.

Not exactly what you are looking for, but Marek Hrivik made the Slovak team as a 17 year old in 2009 when he was playing for the Slovak u20 team that plays in the Slovak top league. The next season he opted to leave the program for QMJHL and due to federation politics it meant that he wasn't selected in 2010 at 18. But then he was chosen to play again at 19 in 2011.

You beat me in 2 hours. Yeah, that was strange. But after all, looking to the roster from 2009/2010, only Maros Grosaft dindt make it to top level. From forwards.
And he wasnt alone to be ignored. Andrej Kudrna did very well in WHL. Also Adam Janosik in QMJHL. They were invited to pre-tournament camp, but were cut.

alko, yes looking back at the forwards now doesn't make the omission of Hrivik and Kudrna seem that terrible. Janosik's seems worse when looking at the D-men in the Hungarian or Polish league.

Pontus Åberg. Made the team as an 18 year old but got injured in the last pre-tournament game and missed the tournament. Did not make the team the next year.

A cursory Google search seems to confirm that Savage was indeed viewed as having a bad attitude, perhaps as a result of not sticking with the Caps for the 1989-1990 season. Statistically that season was a bit of a letdown for him as compared to his previous two seasons in Victoriaville, so any supposed attitude problems may have shown up in his play that year. Interestingly (to me anyway), Lindros made the team as a double-underager that year, and Ricci (the #4 pick in 1990) made the 1989 as a double-underager. The #1 and #3 draft picks in the 1990 draft, Nolan and Primeau, were both cut from camp.

Lindros was a given, but I recall that Ricci was much more highly touted than Primeau or Nolan leading up to the draft, but his stocked dropped a bit relative to theirs. Ricci was also a late birthday so while he was undrafted in 1989, he was 18 years old and in his second CHL season in 1990.

It is true that Ricci's draft stock dropped somewhat leading up to the 1990 draft. That was the first year I really paid attention to the draft and clearly recall Ricci having been seen as the consensus #1 in 1990 a year or so before the draft. The gap narrowed and I think the top four - Nolan, Nedved, Primeau and Ricci were almost coin flips going into the draft. My opinion is that this was probably a case of scouts being exposed to Ricci for a lot longer than the other three, allowing them to scrutinize and pick apart his game a little more. In the end, he wasn't seen to have the upside of the the other three (which was a fair assessment), which probably resulted in him moving down. Of the four, I'd say he had the second best career (after Nolan).

I am curious if anyone knows about Mathieu Schneider in 1989. Made the American team in 1988, had a good year and was healthy in 1989. He should have been the best defenceman on the team but he wasn't there. If I had to guess I don't know if he was cut, refused to participate or something else.
