That magnetic field is actually really interesting, I wonder if that could be implemented in hockey at all.

because both sports play with circular balls, not a puck, its a little different implementation

Sorry, Both a Tennis ball and a Soccer Ball dramatically change shape when propelled forward with immense force. A puck changes shape for a fraction of a second as soo as it is impacted but return back to it's intended state quite quickly.

I imagine a puck would be easier to do than a malleable ball.

Yep! High frame rate camera, is the cheapest and fastest way to solve the problem. As a bonus you get a better TV broadcast.
