MacKinnon Doesn't Want OT Increased to 10 Minutes

making millions but u don't wanna maybe play 5 mins more what 10 -15games a season? poor baby... who cares make it happen lol the fact they so against it makes me want it more

Guy had a wide open McDavid in OT and all he had to was push the puck to him... instead takes a low percentage shot that the goaltender was stopping all night. Wierd flex. If he thinks he is showing up McDavid, hes got another thing coming.

It was never a logical idea to extend OT and anyone who seriously suggests this is severely underestimating the grind that the nhl season already is.

I mean, they already play way too many games, and it's part of the reason why we see some stinkers on a fairly regular basis on a given day.

It would dramatically change the approach to OT IMO.

It would look even more like ringette or half-court basketball where one team just turtles in front of the net until they force a turnover, and then the other team does.

That's kind of the point, in 5 minutes you can shorten the bench and put out only stars. What happens if you're forced to use more players than just your 6 best guys? Probably means some tough decisions that make the game more interesting.

I suppose.

But for every Marek Malik moment where an unheralded guy does something amazing, there are 20 incidents where a mediocre player does something facepalm worthy.

I think the biggest issue is just extending the game time.

Unless they are going to have a tie after 10 minutes of OT, the last thing I want is another ~10 minutes (with whistles) and then a shootout. Games can get pretty late as it is.

How many shootouts have their been this year? I honestly can't recall the Leafs even in being in one. So what team has gone to SO the most? 4-5 times maybe out of 50+ games so far? So 10% of their games. Oh the humanity!

5 minute 3v3 is fine, let it be.

Quick sort of results gives me 46 out of 500 games so far this season.

46 too many. It is a total skills competition, the shootout and proves nothing about how a team will do in the playoffs. The same can be said for 3 on 3 but at least that can be fun to watch. The idea was to avoid teams playing for ties but now teams play for the OT point . They need to increase regular season wins to 3 points.

That overtime by Mackinnon was a perfect example of why he doesn't have a letter on his jersey. Instead of making the better play by using his teammates he put the game at risk over and over trying to be the hero and giving up possession of the puck
THIS! He had McDavid and Makar, and he just rushes the net himself. That first powerplay goal was a key example of the quick passing that McDavid, Makar and Crosby can do and Mac had an open net as a result. MacKinnon needs to learn a thing or two from Crosby....

The reward for a regular season OT is a single point in the standings. How many people in this thread would want to work additional unpaid overtime at a job with inherent risk of physical injury for something that meaningless in the grand scheme of things? Save that kind of sacrifice for when the games actually matter.

you want a guy in overtime taking it into his own hands. lol at calling him a puck hog, he's the guy that should be doing that.... and he nearly won it x 3

Mackinnon didn't beat any D. He shot the puck any chance he got regardless if it's low percentage.

He played the 3v3 like there was an empty net

Did we watch the same game?
He hogged the puck, ran it 100kmh down the ice and shot it at the goalies crest the entire OT.
Like he forgot he had 2 way more intelligent players on the ice with him.
And if any shot went in, he'd be Marner right now. He got the shot off and on net.
