Value of: Mackenzie Weegar or Rasmus Andersson? Who would you trade for and what and/or who would you give up from your team?

For Andersson a lot, Knies is untouchable but Cowan isn’t. For Weegar not very much, some picks and money.

For Andersson from the Canucks I'd do lekk, our 1st, one of our righty dmen and somebody to balance the cap somewhat.

Andersson at that quality and position and cap hit for two playoff runs is custom made for our window. We would probably need to pray for luck in the crease without additional hope though since I don't even think Andersson fits our cap yet in my proposal including Poolman.

It’s pretty funny to see how widely opinions vary on these two players. It’s kind of like the flames board where any one of Weegar/Hanifin/Andersson was viewed as the number 1 depending on the night

I imagine all 3 rank somewhere in the 30-50 range league wide, it’s mostly personal preference at that point

I think Weegar is pretty safely a top 25 defenseman. Him and Toews are pretty much identical, just one is the partner of the best defenseman to play since Lidstrom and the other isn't

Some Dmen who become UFAs inJuly 2025 and may be available on or before the TDL.
Looking at this list, Andersson and Weegar seem pretty attractive.

If Tyson Berry works out in Calgary, I think Andersson is the guy who gets traded. Weegar has stated many times last season that he wants to be part of the Flames rebuild.

IMO Buffalo and Calgary would make great trading partners, they got a couple young centres and one of them could be the foundation of a deal.

I would be willing to retain for the right package.

Yeah, I’d like a Weegar for the Sabres. I think that would go a long way toward correcting what is currently a very talented but imbalanced defensive group in Buffalo.

I would like that. Buffalo has more than a few nice prospects. However, even though a trade seems like the smart thing to do that hasn't exactly been Buffalo's modus operandi over recent years... and I suspect thats because of Pegula meddling. Why stop now?

Flames will get more for Andersson if dealt next summer. Teams will want him long term because of his age so an extension will need to be part of the deal.

As a Habs fans, i think he might be the perfect piece to round up our young D.

Guhle-Andersson
Hutson-Reinbacher
Xhekaj-Mailloux

Would be insane going forward.

If he comes with an extension at let's say 7-7,5M$ per, Habs would be on top of the list of teams having major interest for him.

I would offer Habs 2026 1st, CBJ 2026 2nd and one prospect of Barron/Mesar/Engstrom/Konyshukov.

I should have clarified but IMO, Rasmus would be the one on his way out, not Weegar.

That's a given every year. Buffalo hasn't made the playoffs for the last 13 years and I don't know anyone who would lay that terrible record at the feet of anyone but management and ownership.
Pegula bought the team in Feb 2011... and surprise surprise... that's the last time the Sabres made the playoffs
Pegula still owns and runs the team.

At the moment, Weegar is far and away the better defenceman. He doesn't get much attention because he plays for a bad team, but he's still a top-tier player. I'd put him in the top 20-30 for sure.

His cap hit isn't bad either. But that contract length makes things iffy. With the cap going up though I could see some teams being interested.

Andersson is still a very good offensive player, younger and is a bargain for two years. But defensively he has more warts than Weegar. On a good team I see him more as a solid second-pairing player. He'll get interest for sure though because he's a righty and he's still a solid top-4 Dman.

I don't see the Flames moving on from both. They'd be an absolute train wreck on defence if they do. Ideally you want a vet or two around to mentor your younger players.

Andersson is far more likely to be dealt because he's only signed for two more years and likely doesn't want to return. Weegar will only be dealt if he insists on a trade or someone overpays.

Yeah, I’ve noticed that’s the lean from most Flames fans. If they decide to shop Andersson and only Andersson, a deal makes a lot less sense for the Sabres, though. He’s too similar to what we already have in terms of role/play style for it to be a good fit IMO.

Weegar is definitely a glue type of guy that brings a d-core together. Very versatile and plays at both ends of the ice at a high level.

I don't ever recall Rasmus playing LD during his tenure here. And has always been listed as a right shot RD.

Of the two players mentioned, Weegar is better in my view. That may be because he has two more years of experience under his belt.

I am a firm believer that defencemen don't hit their stride until age 28.

So Andersson may yet have some upside and surpass Weegar as a d-man.

Of the two players I believe Andersson might be the guy to be traded. Very good contract for term and cap. Younger yet able to step in and mentor kids and be a part of a younger group.

While Calgary covets a centre or centre prospect I think they very much want a 1st round pick and a high one at that.

This would limit destinations for Andersson to another rebuilding team destined to finish way down in the standings. Since those team are trying to accomplish what Calgary is I'd cross them off the list.

Now, Montreal is a head of the curve in terms of their re-build. And they own Calgary's 2025 1st round pick. And they seem to need some wiggle room cap wise.

I could see Andersson going to Montreal for Calgary's 1st and a roster player that Montreal isn't overly keen on keeping. Say, Anderson.

Montreal will still have a first and ten other picks in the first round. They would gain ~1M of cap space per year for two years.

Calgary does have a lot of wingers though. Anderson might block a Pelletier or a Coronato, but he would be udner contract for 3 more years. Calgary could look to move Mantha at the TDL and Anderson would be an immediate replacement.

Young wingers wouldn't be blocked for long.

Moving Andersson also relieves some pressure in the organization as they have a few d-men ready to graduate from the AHL.
I'm not overly interested in Andersson because of our time frame but if we could get him this cheap then i would do it. Flames would easily get better offers elsewhere.

Sabres are already loaded with good young PMDs in Dahlin, Power and Byram. They lack a defensive specialist other than Samuelsson.

Sabres should be willing to give up a lot for Weegar. But the GM doesn't seem to view a veteran top 4 defensive specialist as a need.

Weegar is also unlikely to waive his NMC for the Sabres.

It's a move that makes a ton of sense, but will likely never happen.

Hes still a solid top 4 guy. but the cap is just a tad bit high, If Calagry retained 1.25 Mil for 6 years they'd get a lot more, But you usually dont want to tie up a retention spot, but you can always do a 3 team trade down the line.

I have to think that with the on going rebuild nobody 27 or older is untouchable. If everything goes well, this team likely won't be competitive for at least 5 years. In order to do that the Flames will need all the blue chip picks and prospects it can amass. If a Weegar trade can significantly contribute to that pool... I say go for it.

I'd give it two years before they're back spending to the cap trying to be competitive

Getting a top pairing dman like 30 year old Weegar for $5M a year for the next 6 years is outright theft. Like they say in that IKEA commercial... "START THE CAR!"

It'll never happen.
