this is a series of which goalie(s) has better mental toughness. Both teams have goalie sporting a sub-par sv% and 2.5GAA

Series probably comes down to who has more offense....

Canes in 6. No insult to NJ, but this one seems pretty clear on paper.

Anything can happen, though. So should be fun to watch.

From a Devils fan perspective, the Canes are going to have a pretty easy time with this.

After two wins against Minnesota then blowing out the Rangers, vibes were very high.

The Devils follow that up by getting absolutely destroyed at home by Boston and Pittsburgh then not even bothering to show up against the Islanders.

The Devils are getting Hamilton back but we are not one Dougie Hamilton away from fixing this mess.

I voted Canes in 5. Maybe 6 if the Devils can somehow flip some magical switch. I know the Canes haven't been playing too well either so maybe I'm being too hard on the Devils but we'll see.

I think I disagree with your last assessment there, I think the devils are going to have to play boring low event hockey if they want to have a chance to compete.

Without Jack they're not going to be able to play any sort of run and gun series. They will get blown out of the water if they try and have a track meet with the canes imo

I'm not sure I see it that way. My impression is that the low event structured game for both teams will maybe keep the games close but the Canes will have a big advantage minimizing the individual play of the goalies. In a run and gun type of game maybe Markstom can outplay Andersen in a short series and it's not like the Canes have any real high scoring players in the lineup. They have a very deep and balanced forward group but the highest scoring player in the series is Jesper Bratt and the highest goal total is Nico Hischier so it's not all that cut and dried as I see it. Carolina is a heavy favorite regardless but hopefully NJ shows up and makes it a competitive series at least and does not embarrass themselves.

Probably the easier Playoff to predict (Winner)
Due to J.Hughes injury and Hamilton will play but not at 100%
Carolina will win this series in 5

Not particularly optimistic about the Devils chances in this one.

People expecting a rout by the Hurricanes clearly haven’t watched the Devils this year though. The offensive talent is clearly lacking, but this is a strong detailed defensive team that doesn’t give up much at all. I think they keep the games close for that reason. Once you do that, anything can happen.

The issue is I just don’t know where the Devils generate offense from. Devils have largely relied on Hischier and Bratt to drive the offense this year. If Staal is hard matched against Hischier and effectively neuters his line, where is that offense coming from? Same goes for the Devils producing on the power play.

I just don’t see where the offense comes from without some monster performance by the Devils depth players like Tatar, Haula, Glass, Palat, Sprong, Cotter, etc. To be blunt, they haven’t given any indication all season long that they are capable of that.

Those guys are going to need to match up against an Aho line or Svechnikov line in Carolina and find a way to win those minutes. That’s going to be a tough task.

I expect the Devils offense to show up 3 times in the first 6 games.

One of those three they’ll still get outscored.

The other three won’t even be close.

Something like two 4-3 or 4-2 wins, a 5-4 loss, and three losses of the 3-0, 4-1, 2-0 variety.
