Since Jack Hughes went down, the Devils are 28th in xGF%, not ideal to say the least as that would imply the process isn't there. Obviously Jack Hughes is the process, but it looks a lot worse than I even thought. Re-affirms my thoughts - Canes in 5.

You aren't wrong, but Carolina is the same -7 in 5 on 5 goal differential over the last ten games according to money puck. Carolina is the heavy favorite for a reason but they are sort of misfiring a bit lately.

FWIW, they were mediocre majority of the year in xGF% even with Jack. It seems like they're shying away from the uptempo and flying attack they had under Lindy and what made them really really fun to watch in 22-23. That being said, they did all of this to be better in the playoffs ironically enough after the Canes mangled them in 2023. If the Devils can take a step back in the regular season and it leads to better playoff results somehow akin to the Trotz Islanders, I think it'll be a fair compromise.

Lots of talk about missing players. Canes won in 5 in 2023 missing Svech, Tuevo, and Max Pacioretty. It’s part of the game.

Agreed, this feels like another 2023 where whoever's depth seizes the moment, as is with most playoff series, will win the series. The big guns will contribute but feels like those guys will get cancelled off.

That statistic + what I watched when we played you guys recently/the game against the Bruins has me very skeptical of the Devils this season.

The Devils with Jack Hughes, btw, were actually 7th in xGF%. A very stark difference (To be expected when playing with and without one of the best centers in the league).

Even with that, the Hurricanes are 8th in xGF% in that same time frame. xGF% obviously isn't an end all, be all - but it paints a picture of a team's process. The Canes have a much more effective process than the Jack Hughes-less Devils do (As expected tbf)

Went with Canes in 7. Probably the least confident I've felt about the Canes since they made it in '18 but the Devils are pretty injured and Canes are still great at home

Absolutely. NJ has been inconsistent without Jack Hughes. He’s an irreplaceable player but as you’ve noted they haven’t figure out the correct process without him. Some nights they look like themselves but other nights it’s like they don’t even show up.

I have the Canes in this one. NJD are missing their best forward and possibly D man. Hughes is a game changer. That said, I don’t think the Cans will run away with the series; this is a better NJD this time around.

If the Canes were missing Aho, and Slavin was injured/might return from
Injury, and the Devils were fully healthy I would feel confident as a Devils fan.

No reason really for the Canes to drop this series unless their goaltending fully implodes. Canes in 5.
This. And to make injuries equivalent in comparison , add Burns in there. Seigs and Hamilton both out hurts a lot.
Special teams and Markstrom are the only things that prevent the Devils being swept.

I would love to think the Devils can still pull off an upset without Jack, Dougie, and Seigs but they’ve been playing pretty bad lately. Can’t see them pulling it off right now. Hopefully they prove me wrong.

I picked Canes in 5 but hoping the Devils can look competitive and maybe take it to 6 or 7 games.

Two really underwhelming teams. If Markstrom plays, Canes sweep. Allen in net would change things because Carolina can go through some really barren scoring stretches in the playoffs

2 teams I thought could win the cup in preseason. I'll go Carolina as I feel they are in a nice groove. 7 games.

Flames fans trying to be so hard to be funny with Markstrom's struggles in the playoffs is the lamest running joke on HFb. Go look at his stats v Carolina this year. Ironic also that somehow Markstrom would still be the better goalie starting if he was the Devils starter
