It was a 'working hard' penalty. He might have been a bit wreckless, but to say it was "really ****ing stupid" is an overstatement.

However, now that he's taken his 3rd penalty - this late - this probably qualifies as 'really ****ing stupid'.

You're missing the point. It's not about "not trying" it's about playing smarter.

Every time they take a penalty, Hall sits on the bench for 2 minutes or less. When he's your best player, you want to maximize his TOI, not the opposite.
