As others have mentioned, half goes to charities. For many arenas (Amateur and Professional) that half goes to local minor hockey programs.

I believe I understand your concern, @AddyTheWrath , as gambling has infested the NHL like a plague, but 50/50 is one of the decent fundraisers, from my experience & observation.

The 50/50 goes to charity, so a heavy corporate push would more likely indicate that they are making a lot of money, as this would boost their charitable deductions such that they don't actually have to donate from non OCF revenues. At least, I'm guessing that is how the organization is structured.
