Maybe he can learn what it feels like to be the absolute go-to guy on his team? I think he can put some big numbers and what it feels like to carry the load offensively. It might turn up his offensive game more. But then again , what he needs to improve on the most is getting bigger and stronger, he can do that in the gym while playing in Oshawa, and he might get dealt at the deadline. That isnt out of the question to another contender.

And what was he this year if not Oshawa's top offensive player? They had a deep team but he was their biggest offensive threat all year.

Will be one of the more interesting developments to track next season since he won the Memorial Cup. There is not much if anything to gain from going back to junior and since he's a 96 its the NHL or junior for him. His Oshawa team will most likely be among the average-bottom teams in the OHL, and if he's not deemed ready for the NHL there will be a bit of a dilemma.
Maybe he gets traded to a contender.

Considering the Isles are pretty full up front and are one of the more patient teams in the league with their prospects, all signs point to Dal Colle being sent back to Oshawa for one last season. He's the obvious choice to be their next Captain too. I disagree that he has nothing to gain from another season in the OHL, he can continue to refine his game while he gets bigger and stronger. He's also a virtual lock for Team Canada in the WJC considering DJ Smith will be part of the coaching staff for them and because he's a stud. Ryan Strome made big strides in his 200 foot game in his last year in the OHL, the Isles are probably hoping for something similar from MDC.

It should definitely be interesting if he's traded or not though. There was a lot of talk about the influence that ex-Gennies like Laughton and Jenner had on this year's team, Dal Colle is next in line to provide a similar 'passing of the torch' to the next group. Having won the Memorial Cup, Oshawa and Dal Colle may not be as eager to part ways for him to chase it like so many other guys in the past. I personally think he stays in Oshawa for the whole season next year.

This would disappoint me a little bit. He's such a good prospect I think he could step right into the Islanders top 6 next year on the second line with Strome. Him being around to be a 1st line player for the WJC would be a boon to Team Canada, however. If he's in junior, I imagine he wears a letter for Canada as well as captaining the Generals.

Why would it disappoint you if he's back in Oshawa for another year? I agree that he's an excellent prospect and he may have success at the NHL next year, but the Isles are very patient with their kids and the results have been quite positive with Strome, Nelson, Lee, de Haan, etc. Reinhart and Pulock are on the verge of breaking into the NHL, d-men tend to take little bit longer. The big thing is, the Isles put their kids into situations where they can have success and continue to build their confidence. They seemed to have learned their lesson from rushing Bailey (who is looking much better) and the Nino debacle. A little patience can go a long way.

Was wondering what people think of his defensive game this year? Oshawa had an outstanding GA this year. Does he stand out one way or the other with his defensive play?

My 2 cents is that playing in Oshawa's tight defensive system probably gives him an excellent chance of making jump to NHL next year. That said I haven't even watch Memorial cup games yet.

Edit: Re-read this "better" instead of " excellent" is the wording I was looking for. Given NYI forward depth I don't see them keeping him unless he forces his way onto the top 6.

He ain't going to be in the NHL next year, no way, no how.

The isles aren't rushing this kid, the same way they didn't rush Strome- who's skating was superior at this age.

MDC needs to fill out AND work on his skating. He wasn't blowing anyone away in the Memorial Cup, that's for sure.

What's going on? No goal and 4 assists in 8 games so far. -7 also

Oshawa isn't nearly as stacked as they were last year. Dal Colle's obviously struggled thus far to adjust to that. It's concerning for sure, but lets continue to see what he does that season progresses.

A lot of people claimed Dal Colle had nothing left in junior to accomplish, but facing adversity on the ice is obviously something he hasn't faced a whole lot. Also being "the guy" with not much help was something he wasn't exposed to, so I'm glad he's getting a final year in junior.

Least talked about top 5 pick out there.

NYI are in great shape so they can afford to not rush him and let him develop until he is ready.

Isles fans usually keep their prospect talk on their own board, too.

Yes but lots of other people get to see him play and never comment either. Plus, whenever you see people to re-drafts of his draft year, lots of people leave him outside the top 10. That is what I meant.

I like what the Isles cupboard of prospects.

4 guys in particular, Barzal, Pulock, Beauvillier, and Dal Colle. The only pick I did not like was the Hosang pick, didn't like it then, still don't like it now.

This is a team on the up.

I'm not taking much away from the slow start in Junior, but it is concerning that Dal Colle was drafted as a guy with a projectable frame and he just doesn't seem to be growing into it the way it was expected... He didn't seem to make any strides in terms of strength or acceleration between his first and second NYI camps. It is still early, though. Maybe he just gets his man strength a little later on. Who knows?

OHL championship, Memorial Cup Championship. The Loss of DJ Smith and some teammates. Nothing much more for Dal Colle to prove. He will probably pick it up as the season progresses. But it is really no surprise. He already put up a better PPG the year after he was drafted. He has nothing to prove in junior this year.
