Great example of his game. Battles hard to recover the puck in the D-zone. Battles hard to get first to the puck in the O-zone and delivers a nice pass.

Not the biggest guy but possesses great athleticism. Especially for his age... You can tell by the upper body development.

I see a more polished version of Gallagher... Some posters in this thread compared him to Marchand which is a good comparison as well. Most likely a first rounder in 2021.

Where did you find this picture? That's a Lac St.Louis hockey bag (Midget AAA) so that's at least from 1 year ago

Just saying

I don't think so. They had him on their roster but when this game supposedly happened he was in Quebec.

He didn't. He signed maybe a week before the EHF Selects season started and never played a game on this side of the border. He was, bizarrely, listed as having played one game, but he never suited up for the GBL Bruins or Kimball Union.

Here are my scouting notes on his performance on November 25th 2020 for anyone interested.

Summary : Malatesta is a fiery and aggressive attacker, who, despite his size, plays like a power forward, actively getting involved on the forecheck and pressuring opponents with a physical edge. The left winger exhibited his relentless motor on the puck pursuit, as he frequently led the forecheck with his sprightly feet and passionate checks. The Canadian prospect possesses a very strong upper-body, allowing him to shake even the most solid rearguard. Malatesta didn’t recover as many pucks in corners as I would have hoped to see, but his animated puck pursuit did pressure and force quick decisions on defensemens, causing a few mistakes throughout the game. His competitive nature also applied to the defensive end, where he displayed quick changes of positioning to cover an open threat or simply put the extra effort to close out on the backcheck. Flashing his dynamic, springy stride, thanks to a quick transition from his outside to inside edge, Malatesta created a majority of his attacks on transitional offense. Mixing-in quick, fluid hands and an excellent balance, the 5 foot 9 attacker can be a tough assignment on rush defence, being able to beat anyone on both the outside, and inside lane. His aggressivity opened a lot of opportunities to connect with his teammates, but his lack of touch as a playmaker minimized his offensive impact. Malatesta could also get caught playing with his head down, forcing him to guess his teammates positioning as he rushed his decision-making. The 2021 NHL Draft eligible owns some very interesting assets through his skating, competitiveness, puck skills and physical presence, but his inability to control his own pace, use teammates as anchors and play to his cerebral potential might refrain his ceiling. I could see him becoming a forecheking/agitator type of player at the NHL level. His combination of intensity, quick feet and combativity mixes well as a role player on a bottom 6 at the next level.

Here are my scouting notes on his performance on November 19th 2020 :

Malatesta is an ambitious attacker who threats every puck pursuit and counterattack as a way to leave his mark on the game and put on display is exceptional compete. Despite what many would think, his humble size didn’t slow him down a bit ; physical play actually attracted him more than anything. The left winger had an obvious penchant for the dump and chase style of play, often placing the puck behind the defender in rushes, and betting on his quickness and relentless combativity to establish the attack. He got on the forecheck with mean intentions, thoroughly enjoying finishing his hits, and worked through puck battles with a vicious stick. The 5 foot 9 draft eligible owns a marvelous upper-body strength, which allowed him to fight off checks and take control of corners effortlessly. Malatesta showcased great, dynamic offensive instincts to jump on countless odd man rushes as both the puck carrier and a passing option crashing the net. The Canadian attacker exhibited an exceptional explosion on his two-step acceleration, and followed through with an impressive foot speed all the way to his top velocity. His straight-line drive and/or crossovers allowed him to completely bypass anyone given the lane thanks to a superior speed. Malatesta possesses a very quick, threatening puck delivery on his wrist shot, which he loved to fire on the fly. He also enjoyed using his intensity as a gravitational weapon to help his teammates get open and look for easy setups. He doesn’t have the vision or touch of a first-rate playmaker, but he’s looking to create for his allies just as much. Despite holding to some high-end skills, Malatesta already plays like a role player/complementary piece at the junior level. He trades creativity and elusiveness for intensity, making quick plays to force the hand of his opponents rather than look at his complete options. This limits his potential, but offers a style of play easily compatible with any NHL team’s bottom 6.

He has been really good so far in 2021. He had a slow start to the season in October-November but since the return in January, he's doing really well. Gaucher and him have developed a nice chemistry.

Before the December break (8 games): 1 goal, 2 assists, -9. Averaging 3 shots per game

Since January (12 games): 7 goals, 7 assists, +3. Averaging 4.75 shots per game

Today's highlights (1 goal, 2 assists) : Québec est en feu! Remparts 4 Huskies 0 – LHJMQ

A seventh-round pick, 116th overall by the Quebec Remparts in the 2019 QMJHL Entry Draft, James Malatesta has turned into a draft steal. He scored 23 goals and 22 assists for 45 points in 59 games as a QMJHL rookie. He also played for Team Canada Black at the Under-17 World Hockey Challenge. Malatesta scored three goals and three assists for six points in five tournament games. Malatesta was even better in his second year in the league. He scored 10 goals and 23 points in 32 games. He also scored three goals and four points in six playoff games.

Malatesta came up as part of the Lac St. Louis system, one that is recognized as one of the top development systems in Quebec. In 2018-19 he put up seven goals and 12 points in 22 games in midget AAA. Malatesta came alive in the playoffs. He added 11 goals and 23 points in just16 games. He joined Team Quebec at the Canada Winter Games. Malatesta scored two goals and five points in six games on the way to a gold medal. He was also part of Team Quebec Blue at the Quebec Cup, also taking home the title.

'He's a pit bull': Blue Jackets prospect James Malatesta is built for the next level

“He has a violent, violent shot, unbelievable speed, and he’s highly, highly competitive where he’s got that Brad Marchand and Yanni Gourde element about him where he’s got speed and this tenacious, ratty, pain in the ass to play against attitude. And he relishes those comparables. That fuels him,” said Jon Goyens, who coached Malatesta with the Lac St-Louis Lions and then against him in the QMJHL for a season as the head coach of the Baie-Comeau Drakkar.
