Pontus Holmberg played on Vaxjo's 1st line for quite a bit of the preseason. He will start the 2018-19 season on their 3rd line, with Vegas 3rd round pick Jonas Rondbjerg and St. Louis 1st round pick Dominik Bokk. I watched a couple of Vaxjo's games, leading up to the regular season and Holmberg has some really projectable skills, such as skating and hands. He's a long shot to make the Swedish WJC in December but if he can stick in the SHL, he'll make it difficult for the Tre Kronor staff to leave him off the team.

Toronto traded up into the 6th round to draft Holmberg. The Maple Leafs have had a lot of success with drafting Swedes in the later rounds.

Holmberg played his first SHL game of the season on September 20th.

13:33 minutes, 1 shot, no points.

He played 4 minutes more than Vegas 3rd round pick Jonas Rondbjerg.

By all accounts he had a strong pre-season.

Will be nice to see him put together a strong year. Could be our next Johnsson.

From what I saw during the preseason, he's physically ahead of both Johnsson and Engvall.

He's a really exciting no-name prospect.

This pick screams Thommie Bergman special. Looks like a very toolsy player, hopefully he can put up some points this year because it looks like he'll be given a good opportunity.

Could be the next Johnsson/Engvall.

From the CHL games I saw this dude is soo much better than I expected. He has serious talent, I think he’ll be way more important to Växjö this year than Bokk or Røndbjerg will. What surprised me the most is that there was no way you would’ve guessed that he was only 19 years old.

Holmberg is doing well in the Play-Offs this year.

11 points in 13 games and I think there's a couple of GWG in there.

Finished with 14 in 14 in the SHL finals and won playoffs MVP. Definitely an underrated prospect even by our own fanbase.
Agreed. He's always been seen as a bottom 6 C perhaps since that's how he's played up until this season. But he does have some pedigree and seeing as how he's represented Sweden at multiple international tournaments, clearly he's got something above what we have previously seen in him as a fanbase.

Good for the kid though. You can never have enough good players.

I see, swedish forward of the year then is the correct terminology?
Well, that implies it's any Swedish forward, not just those playing in Sweden(the Swedish PHWA has a separate award for best NHL/WHA player in Viking Award).

What I find odd though is that the award is supposed to be just for the regular season. Considering Holmberg was awarded it, that's a big lie.

And just found out Omark won it while playing in the KHL(only player to win one of their awards while playing outside of Sweden)? Well, sounds like their awards are beyond rubbish, then.
