LW Brett Pollock - Edmonton Oil Kings, WHL (2014, 45th, DAL; 2016 trade CGY)

Pollock looks tired and a little overwhelmed. I imagine its the wear and tear of such a long season and travel. He will need to work on his consistency though, I'm not saying it isn't an issue. Its too bad because he looked like a late first rounder at times.

Maybe it's a question of conditioning, this can be worked out.

Reminds me of Jamie Benn... if the home town Oilers are not in on him I definitely think DAL will do something to grab him...

I've got him 7th for my WHL rankings (Should put them up sometime this week). My biggest concern about his game is his consistency of effort from night-to-night, even shift-to-shift. When he's dialed-in, ready-to-go, there's little he can't do: bowl over an opponent, stickhandle the puck between his own legs, go top shelf, break up an opposing scoring rush. But, other times, I'll watch him shy away from contact, make a bad pass, or wave his stick half-heartedly at a puck carrier. It's not a huge deal, I mean, it's not like he'll disappear for several games, sometimes it's only a couple shifts, and I think it's correctable, but it's my main concern with him. I wouldn't hesitate to take him in the first round, either. He's been great in the playoffs, but he's been playing at a very high level all year, so it's not like his success is entirely due to a hot-streak or playing with the surging Edgars Kulda.

I agree with the above in assessing his weaknesses; i've seen the same thing. It certainly could be an issue of conditioning and being tired. He has doubled the amount of games he played last year. But Brett still had a very good playoffs, the finals and mem cup, not as much.

But caley is right about his strengths as well, if you watch a game from the first 3 series, you will see a guy who has the tools and skills to do anything he pleases in this league (WHL). He can score with his shot from anywhere on the ice, dangle defenders, power through just about the majority of players in the league. I love his game and he is one of my favorites this draft (posters on HFCanucks will attest ). I hope he makes it the Canucks at 36.

Finished this last night:

Also, this is a good article addressing his surge, a stick issue and some tidbits about his past as a defenseman. http://www.edmontonjournal.com/Brea...+best+defence+good+offence/9789043/story.html

I've seen him listed as a C and LW. Better suited for the wing at the next level?

Agree with this, even these teenagers are physically dominant for teens, they still do not have bodies of men (except Ekblad's growth hormones). Pollock is having himself a 94 game season, yes other players are looking better than him, but I think this is a legitimate excuse (tiredness). In the end we will have to see how good he does for the NHL combine.

Agreed about comparison, of course he's not even close to Jamie's talent level though. I see him as a mid to low 2nd rounder.

I think the comparison is more like previous Dallas draft pick Reilly Smith. Good hands, can do anything he wants with the puck, but he's obviously bigger and capable of being physical. He sounds like a guy Dallas has consistently drafted in the Neal, Smith, Eriksson, Ully, Troock, Sceviour mode.

I think I'd be very happy if he fell to their 2nd round pick.

So 3 rounds earlier than where Benn was drafted in a similar quality draft. Was Jamie Benn really considered that talented as a draft eligible? Playing tier 2 junior and going in the 5th round?

So you think that Pollock will be an annual 20+ goal scorer and 30+ assist man that Jamie Benn is? You honestly believe that Pollock has a fantastic chance of being a PPG player in his prime? Anything can happen, but I would be extremely surprised if he developed into that type of star. Both players can have the similar background to enter the NHL, but that doesn't mean their development path will be the same.

Benn went in the 5th round for 2 reasons. First, he was playing in a lower tier league. And second(and more importantly), he was maybe the worst skater in the entire 2007 draft at the time. The main reason he is the 1st line player he is today is because he made huge strides in improving his skating.

I like Pollock's skill, but I didn't feel he played his best at the Memorial Cup. He's got the size and he does use it in some circumstances (eg. puck protection) but I just really wanted to see him hit and unfortunately it was a rarity to see him take the body. His talent alone gives him a shot at the late first/early second but he would be very highly regarded for this draft if he had a mean streak. My biggest concern is when we interviewed he felt his physical game is improved. I'd expect him to go in the 20-40 range.

Leading the team in goals and points, Edmonton definitely isnt as stacked overall as previous years, but he has played pretty solid in the limited viewings I've seen him in. If anyone has seen more than a game or two their input would be great.
