LW Brennan Othmann (2021, 16th, NYR)

His skating holds him back. His skating was always serviceable at lower levels but it really catches up to him at the NHL level.
He also isn't that effective without the puck on his stick. Needs to be deployed in offensive situations, he's just not very well suited to be a bottom 6 forechecker in the league (yet)

Thinking about next season, I think he’ll continue to get opportunities, but I think next year will be a make or break season.

Berard has kind of passed him on the depth chart. I don’t think Berard is some amazing player necessarily, but he has more utility if he isn’t gonna score than Othmann. He’s more responsible defensively and plays with more pace.

And Perreault is also going to show up and start competing for a spot on the big club rather immediately. I think there will still be opportunities there, but Othmann has to show he can score a little more at the NHL level and improve his defense at the NHL level. He’s not an untalented player, but he’s kind of looking in his early NHL stint like a AAAA guy that can score in the AHL, but he doesn’t have top 9 NHL scoring abilities and doesn’t have the speed or defense for the 4th line.

This is true but he also needs to get bigger to be more effective as the volume hitter he wants to be. Othmann was always gonna be a project and he's gonna take time but I think in order for him to reach his potential, the Rangers have to start to use him properly. Their PP is trash and Othmann, for all his flaws, is an elite sniper. Rangers won't get very far this season if their PP doesn't get better.

Othmann has always been a streaky scorer, even back in the OHL and in Switzerland. PP-time could help his confidence him while figuring out even strength hockey in the NHL. Also, while Othmann isn't a bad kid he certainly does have quite the attitude. I think if he doesn't get a proper chance he's sooner or later gonna ask for a trade.

Where do you expect they play him? He isn't replacing anyone in the top 6. The only player higher up in the lineup he could potentially swap for is Berard, and Berard has been miles better than him. The idea of "using a player properly" is nonsense. Prove you belong, right now he hasn't. He really didn't deserve a call up either, that was basically just based on merit.

The most important thing would be PP-time. And sometimes when things aren't going well you have to use players based on potential, not merits. Brennan Othmann, for all his flaws, is a very skilled kid. And the Rangers PP is 25th in the NHL, rocking a 18,6%. You think that's gonna do come playoff time? Maybe not even to defend the wildcard spot...if you ask me. If the Rangers wanna win this season then I'm not sure they necessarily have a lot to lose.

Also, if the Rangers aren't gonna play Othmann they probably should have traded him ahead of the deadline. Like I said...kid has an attitude. Wouldn't surprise me if he's pissed already.

We used Kakko based on his potential, not his merits, and he was abysmal. You are talking about a team thats in the middle of a playoff push not a celler dweller. Its simply not happening. I am sure he was in the middle of plenty of trade talks. I have no issue moving him, Cuylle and Berard have already surpassed him and Perreault is on his heels.

Othmann isn't Kakko. And again...do you really think the Rangers can get very far or even just hold onto a wildcard spot with such a poor PP? The Rangers are far from a contender. I think they need every bit of skill they can get.

And just like that he’s now out of the lineup.

That’s what happens when your team is in a playoff race, you make the turnover on the GWG, and you also have 0 points in 14 NHL games.
Went from people thinking he should be on the PP to a healthy scratch. Its wild how people don't think these players should be held accountable and they should be handed opportunity on a silver platter.

Othmann can skate around and hit a bit, but provided nothing else. 8 minutes isn't going to get a lot from a player but he looked lost and behind the play. Also passed up some shooting opportunities which is sad because that's really the only thing that would keep him in the lineup.
