Brendan Perlini
1996-04-27
Position: LW
Birthplace: Guildford, England
Ht: 6'02 Wt: 182lbs
Shoots: Left

He was the 16th overall pick in the 2012 OHL Draft. Barrie traded him to Niagara and he started coming around offensively late in the season. He even managed to earn some time playing on the PP with Brett Ritchie and Ryan Strome. During the summer he was invited to the Ivan Hlinka camp for Canada but was eventually cut from the team. He's back this season with Niagara in a more prominent role and was recently ranked by Central Scouting as a B Skater in the OHL.

He's not getting any hype from HFers but he'll be a late first or 2nd round pick in the 2014 draft. Has a ton of raw talent and great hands. Reminds be a bit of Brett Ritchie but is a better skater (better startup and overall foot speed). Is still developing his offensive instincts and overall game as he didn't get a ton of icetime as a rookie in Barrie last year but since being traded to Niagara has been a fixture in the top 6. Perlini is playing on the top line this year with playmaker Carter Verhaeghe. He's more of a drive to the net and greasy areas type scorer and fairs better paired with a playmaker; although this doesn't mean he can't show glimpses of finesse. Will be intestesting to see his progression this season - so far has 4 goals in the first three games of the season.

He ought to have a good season in Niagara, Verhaeghe is no slouch. He has a chance to sneak into the top 20 or so but i see him as more of a 2nd rounder at this point.

The comparable i come back to is a JVR lite. Good hands in close to the net, is most effective taking out the trash and knocking in loose pucks. Hasnt fully learned the art of the drive hard and wide power game, but he can if he applies himself.

Holy hell, Guildford (as mentioned as his birthplace). Never thought I'd read that name out here. I was on a student's exchange near that place a long, long time ago and was at their rink some day. Laughed a bit over the logo of the residing Guildford Flames, which is precisely the Calgary Flames one with the added line for the "G". I mean, our own wasn't any more of a blatant ripoff, but then again, we were only a few kids playing inline hockey.

Thought he looked really promising last season playing with Strome and Ritchie, since he really is the full package for a future Top 6 NHL forward, but was worried that he might've been the beneficiary of his two dominant linemates. Glad to see with his hot start, that he could be the real deal at the OHL level.

Big, decent enough skater, and a soft pair of mitts. A less dynamic version of Bobby Ryan but the big man with hands comparison seems on par to me. Hope he can keep it up.

I see the Bobby Ryan in him a little bit, but Ryan is more drive the net or finesse his way through the defense. Perlini is more of an Andreychuk-style garbageman.

He had a very Andreychuk-esque goal last night. Puck was sitting in the crease and he got in the dirty area and just poked it in. Other than that had some solid forechecks that lead to a couple of assists (benefiting from a few neutral zone turnovers and taking the puck towards the net). Perlini seems to be able to take advantage of opportunities that are given to him. Not necessarily able to carry the puck around the ice and slow the play down though. He benefits from a playmaker for sure - don't really agree with the Bobby Ryan comparison as he doesn't have nearly the same level of skill Ryan had as a 17 year old.

For those that don't know, Brendan Perlini is the son of ex Leafs player Fred Perlini.

Very promising prospect that will likely be a first rounder this year. Lots to like.

What is his IIHF status? Born in the UK, but it looks like he has has played only in Canada. I would assume Canadian then?

He's both GB & Canada eligible but looks like he'll pursue Canada. He was at the Ivan Hlinka camp but got cut and will likely be on the U18 this season seeing as Niagara won't be competing come playoff time.

Between the father connection and Verhaeghe, i think the leafs wil lhave eyes on him all season. Strong possibility they draft him

Especially if we are in the middle of the pack.

Yep. if we end up picking between 14-22ish as expected i cant really see them not picking him. The connection is clearly there and they could use a player like him. Could free up some cap space on the wings in a couple years.

We have been lacking skilled players in the wing, majority of our prospect are grinders in that department tbh.

Very good point...still would be nice to add in that cupboard which is filled with 2b - 3A line wingers for sure.

Although I believe center is an area we should look towards more.

I agree but personally im not sold on any of the centres in our realistic range. Some dmen interest me but i just see Perlini as being the one guy we can realistically expect to pick in our range. maybe Ho-Sang, but i doubt he falls that far.

He has a goal & 2 assists tonight, 10 minutes into the Niagara/Owen Sound game. That gives him 15 points now which ties him with Connor Brown for 1st in OHL scoring. They both have fathers who played pro hockey in Great Britain lol

Edit: 3goals 2 assists through 2 periods giving him 17 points in 8 games now.

For now i'd say a hot streak but if he keeps up his play through new year i dont see how he isn't a huge riser. Im not gonna say top 10, but maybe top 10.
