It's because he's awkward as hell (personality wise) and has a lot of identifiable flaws to his game which even his most ardent supporters acknowledge. It's like watching the Big Bang Theory - sometimes cringe worthy but still satisfying. Definitely not the cool kid in the room and will never be captain material, but he's got a good attitude, works hard, is respectful, and doesn't piss people off And his flaws are so pronounced that he's almost reached underdog status,-- you cheer him to on so that others will be proved wrong.

I can't find it now but there was a Kings prospect segment from last year with the guys on the beach and Kaliyev was like a nervous puppy

I'm not sure he said a word the whole episode but wore a giant smile and I'm pretty sure it was his birthday or something, luckily we have some crazy-affable prospects like Turcotte who were really trying to make him feel comfortable and welcome.

He's just socially awkward but he's super friendly and I'm not sure I've seen a shyer player.

A case of people wanting their favorite team to be right for passing on him. It's okay to dislike his game but there is nothing about the individual that is unlikeable.

He had this nervous tic thing going on in his postgame interview last night. It is very understandable how he could have bombed interviews at the combine. The only player I can ever think of where you can wonder if he is on the spectrum.

of course, he seems like a great kid.

It's the nhl scouts and experts who will draft a guy like DeAngelo in the top 20 despite his racism and general douchiness, but Kaliyev drops because he's shy and socially awkward.

I forget where I heard it from, like a scout or a writer or something that he thinks Arty gets nervous around people who are older than him, but he's absolutely one of the boys when around guys his own age. Like I'm pretty sure him and Turcotte and everyone in and around the team gets along with him really well.

Just absolutely snakebit like everyone else, every goalie they have played has been a wall so far.

I don't think he's ever going to be an elite offensive threat. But he scores at every level he plays at. He's taken a lot of flak for a guy who score as much as he does. I definitely think he'll be a good secondary scorer in the NHL

I can see that level of player, a 45-55 point player, 20-30 goals. Possibly pushing 60-65 points in a career year kind of player...That's great value out of a second round pick.

He is playing pretty well at the Pro level in his first year which is usually a good sign. Expecially since he should be playing in the OHL because of age.
His passing\vision and board play are underated as well. He is not just a shooter, although his shot is still lethal. If he can find another gear it will help him transition to the NHL. He is one of our bigger forward prospects along with QB. Need those big bodies.
