There's definitely a chance, but he'll have to outplay Jurco and a few others to do it. It's more likely that he spends a year in GR just because Jurco is the better player right now.

Maybe.. IF he doesn't end up making the team, I imagine he spends most of the season in GR. Unless he's putting up numbers as impressive has his junior numbers, there are a few guys that I think have earned the call before him. Cally and Ferraro at least. Depends on who gets injured I suppose. It's possible that both him and Jurco start in the AHL.

Callahan & Ferraro are waiver eligible next season so they either start in the NHL or they get waived and likely get claimed.
I see Mantha as the #3 option next year. I think Jurco is in the AHL come next October & I think Pulkkinen will still be ahead of him due to his more complete game.

While all those guys are ahead of him... if his offensive game keeps rolling, and defense game rounds out, I'm not so sure he couldn't jump ahead of all those players. And if Babcock likes him, I'm almost 100% sure he'll get more games than the average Red Wing rookie.

We won't be too deep(on forward prospects) in GR next season as we have so many guys graduating. Jurco will be dominating the AHL if he starts there and be up before November ends imo. Pulkkinen is one of the best goalscorers in the league and is due for a longer look eventually. But after that there's Frk who struggled greatly this season, and second rate prospects. Mantha can be up before christmas, if he deserves it obviously.
If Detroit chooses to sign and/or re-sign some UFA veterans, even Jurco might start next season in the AHL. Mantha needs to have a phenomenal trainig camp, otherwise him being groomed with quality ice time on a Griffins team that was both very successful and a steady source of helpful NHL callups seems to be the logical option. Keep in mind that he is extremely talented, but no so much well-rounded yet.

While you're not totally off-base with this statement, I believe the Griffins will have Athanasiou and Janmark incoming next season, correct?

Ken Holland said during an intermission interview 2 weeks ago that the plan was to give him 6 or s pre season games and to give him a legit shot to make the team. Then just recently in an interview with Wychniski or however you spell it, Holland said the plan is to have him in Detroit in the next year to year and a half, if not sooner.
Detroit usually takes their time with guys but theyre coming out before this season is even done and talking him up about giving him a shot in camp. It could be Holland blwoing smoke but hes never said this about prsopects before so he must be extremely high on him.
At 6'4 if hes doing well theyll bring him up quick. Hes also tough when he decides to scrap, which he showed in a good scrap last night. The wings need that in the line up, obviously the wings wont bring him up because of that but if htey know he can handle himself they'll worry about him less

That's an exaggeration. For the first half of the year, adjusting to the pro game, yes he did struggle greatly (much like Jurco did last year, and Frk was not afforded near as much playing time as Jurco). The 2nd half Frk was much better and really started flashing some high end skill. So there's promise for the rest of this season and going into next season that he can continue to build on it.
Unless we are resigning Alfie, I think we're good at forward. The young kids will only get better. What we need to do is sign some top 4 defenders.

I think he'll get a long look but I'd be surprised if he makes the team full time next season. I think he and Pulu will alternate getting call ups. Jurco will start the year with the team if possible. If not he'll be the first call up. I think Babs really likes his game and grittiness however, so I wouldn't be surprised to see someone moved to keep him in the lineup, especially if Jurco works on his defensive game over the summer.
I am not so certain that Ferraro or Callahan get claimed if the Wings waive them (or if the Wings would care if they lose either guy). I just read a stat that Ferraro has 4 goals and 2 assists total in his past 27 games and 30 points total in 68 games. He wasn't exactly impressive in his limited time as a call up, and it isn't like the Wings are hurting for guys that play a similar role as him. I feel similarly about Callahan, except that he is having a great season in the AHL, but it seems like guys like him grow on trees. He is a gritty guy who can chip in goals and could find a niche as a bottom line guy in the NHL, but is there room on the Wings roster for him in that role?
I can't see them keeping them around just because they lose their waiver exemption next season. It didn't stop them from waiving Emmerton and Mursak, both of whom cleared waivers. Every team has fringe NHL guys on their AHL team, and might want to give their guys a shot instead of taking a flier on someone like Ferraro or Callahan. If they start the year in Detroit, I think it is a matter of time before they get waived anyway in favor of someone like Jurco, Pulkkinen, Mantha, etc...
About Mantha, he will get a chance to make the roster, but I think he will need to be super impressive in camp/preseason to make it. And not just stats, but also how they perceive his all around game. I'd like to think he can make it, but he would have to beat out Jurco, who is establishing himself as an NHLer now, and it depends on if they want to bring Alfredsson back/if he wants to come back. I guess same with Legwand too.

He's got great skills, had a great year, has a large frame, and dare I say he looks realgud. I think more than your typical RW prospect, he's going to get a good chance to make the team. Not only does Babcock like his size, but the Wings need another large forward or two on the team.
For most Wings prospects, I'd say he's going to be in the AHL and see callups. For Mantha, I'm saying it's entirely in his hands.

Just wanted to chime in with my viewing of Mantha from last night. To be completely honest, it wasn't his best game for sure. Trying to say that delicately, it's just that I was expecting 'more' because I was excited to watch him live. I wouldn't have really noticed him if I wasn't constantly looking for #8. He does have a lot of skill though and seems like he knows which passes to make (and will make little adjustments to his stick to make the pass). I believe he scored the empty net goal for Val-d'Or. But I will say that Val-d'Or has a huge team in terms of physical size. I also noticed right away that Mantha already has an NHL frame. He will probably need some AHL time, but he should be ready to make the jump to the pros very soon.
He played really well again. Can't wait to see him and Val d'Or take Drouin and Halifax out.
I see him getting a really good look for the Wings next year.

I wouldn't say he was bad, I would just say he was... average. Can't even say if he was Val-d'Or's best player last night. Ehlers was the best player on the ice for both teams... I guess I will defer to another attendee's comment and he seemed to share my view on the game:
Again, this is just based on last night's game alone because I can't comment on his season as a whole. He clearly has the body for the pros and seems like he will be an ideal Red Wing when its all said and done. He will learn their system and play within it.

Val-d'Or did a great job. Unfortunately where my seat was located I didn't have the best view when the PK was ongoing. But as a 3 man unit, the team did a great job or getting in the paths and keeping the Moose to the outside. Mantha appears like he is very open to being inserted into any team system with ease. I think this will allow him to be an ideal Red Wing with the threat of his offensive creativity.
An example from last night is that he did a nice play off a play the Red Wings typically do... the shoot wide/rebound off the boards. There was a play that occurred in front of me last night where the puck bounced off the boards and he was standing by the post and attempted to gently tap the puck behind him to an open player. It didn't work during this instance, but just made me think that he will fit in just fine in the Red Wings system. I think he will be a future 1st/2nd liner for the Wings for sure. Just allow him some time to learn the system.
Like I said on the Wings board. Matha had a relatively quiet game last night. Still had a goal, an assist, +3 and led his team in shots. So, relative to expectations, quiet night in the way it went given the empty netter and everything. That said, the good thing about games like last night is he's not having off nights anymore. He still did some good things forcing turnovers in the offensive zone, played well on a 5 on 3, picked Drouin off on the PK, draws a penalty, more responsible defensively, on the ice to late in the game as Halifax is trying to comeback and all that sort of thing. If he's your average grinder, people would be pretty ecstatic saying you need those guys to win playoffs games. Those were some of the knocks against him at the draft. Can't say he didn't improve in that aspect of the game. Not to mention, he got a pretty good scoring chance on a breakaway.
He started off slowly but played well as Val d'Or was building its lead. From that point on, it was about protecting the lead.
