Sounds like someone who is being a decent human being.

Listen to Dion talk in interviews, lets be serious, he doesnt have the brains to be captain.

I'm not a Dion hater either, I'm just laying the facts out, Lupul is much more capable as a captain than Dion.

Ability to talk to a camera has nothing to do with the ability to talk to a team. Belak, Biznasty, etc all had great camera presence. Would you want them the captain of your team?

In terms of personality, both wouldnt be bad choices..... Belak was known to be amazing in the room.

Lets be serious though, whens the last time a 4th line grinder was captain of a team?

I'm not saying strip Dion of the C, it would be a PR nightmare. I'm saying Lupul would make a better captain.

Do you play or work for the Toronto Maple Leafs?

No? Then stop acting like you have any idea what sort of leader Phaneuf or Lupul are behind the scenes.

Case closed.

Isnt that what message boards are about? Discussion?

Sorry to ruffle your feathers, I'll be sure to post nothing controversial or opinionated in the future!

This is great news!

I'm a fan of Phaneuf, and, despite his rather clumsy, halting way of addressing the media, I think he clearly brings some value to the table as Captain, but I'd also be happy to see Lupul slotted into the position.

I don't think rhetorical eloquence is required of a Captain in the NHL. Most of the tired questions that reporters rehearse on a nightly basis don't merit much of a response anyway.

Well based on the rumors in Calgary that he conflicted with Iginla, I think its safe to say that Lupul is a much better teammate, and leader than Dion. Lupul didnt create any problems in Anaheim when he fell down the depth chart. Dion was traded for next to nothing just to get his personality out of the room.

Fine, not facts but, where theres smoke, theres fire.

Yes, that's why Iginla was the first person to call Dion personally and congratulate him on becoming captain of the Leafs and it's also why they spend a lot of time hanging out and exchanging playful jabs at one another at the All Star game. Yeah, I'm sure Iginla sure hates his guts. Since you apparently haven't been updated, there was no bad blood with Iginla. Former teammates have come out and said that there wasn't bad blood between the two and the issue with Dion in Calgary was that he was a vocal guy and as a rookie, that didn't sit well with some of the other guys. Judging by how Leafs players describe Dion, I would think it's a fair guess that being outspoken wasn't meant to be disrespect to his Calgary teammates, it was just Dion staying true to his personality - which just so happens to clash with the traditional mindset of how a rookie should act.

There's nothing wrong with thinking that another personality may be a better fit as captain but if you want your opinion to have any merit in the discussion then you should at least explain yourself reasonably rather than pretend to know what kind of captain Dion is as well as use exaggerated rumours and crapping on the way the guy speaks during an interview as though those things hold a lot of weight in your favour. rather than based on rumours and your own assumptions.

Edit: And for the record, I do think Lupul would make a great captain for the team based on what I've seen of him so far.

Get the feeling he'll resign and be a big part of the leadership crew here in Toronto.

I like Dion as Captain but Lups would make a good captain too.

So, because the marketing department of MLSE thinks that Lupul will make a good face for this promotion, he should be captain. :shakehead

I've got to admit that Lupul probably wouldn't be high on my list of potential captains. He always seemed like a bit too much of a party boy type.

But pehaps that's what it is All the college kids and early twenty-somethings that hang around here see a guy they'd like to party with and think he should be captain.

But as others have said, we're not in the dressing room and thus, really have no idea who is or is not a leader.

Nonis and some of the players in camp have spoken about his leadership qualities so far.

He's good with the media too and taking on 'Lups Troops' can't hurt.

I'd like to see him as 'A' at least.

Calgary gave Dion away for nothing for a reason.

Easily my favourite Leaf last year, aside from Grabo. I hope this guy gets the A he deserves VERY soon.

These things aren't decided till roster cuts right? I mean, don't the Leafs re-evaluate this every year?

Sounds like damage control after the entire NHL unanimously face-palmed after they saw Calgary's return.

Nice hyperbole.

Just make sure that next time you partake in discussion, you have an iota of what you're talking about.

Great imagination on ya, though.
