I would advise people not to get to attached to the idea we're going to tank and get a high pick.

I still think Roberto Luongo is a Leaf is very near future. I think even if he prefers Florida, And that's completely understandable, I think he knows the likely scenario is Toronto, And is slowly embracing it.

If you look at his past tweets under the strombone1 handle.

You got back to Luongo jersey tweet, Or to the "can I get some tickets" and there's a few other involving Toronto.

It's just a theory.

under the new CBA the 14 teams that miss the playoffs go into the lottery so tanking isn't as attractive anymore

anyway, after the Jays/Marlins trade broke, Marlins remember are Luongo's team, he tweeted (nov 13)

Strombone ‏@strombone1

Weirdest thing, Jeffrey Loria just called.......
Expand

which doesn't necessarily mean anything, but is consistent with your point (as Loria is the Marlins owner and was calling players to advise them they were part of that salary dump trade to toronto)

1. Tank.
2. Trade Joffrey Lupul, Tyler Bozak, Cody Franson and Clarke MacArthur.
3. Draft Nathan MacKinnon, Elias Lindholm or Alexander Barkov.
4. Sign Corey Perry, Niklas Backstrom, Paul Ranger and David Clarkson.

Going into 2013/14...

Perry - MacKinnon - Kessel
JVR - Grabovski - Kulemin
Komarov - Kadri - Clarkson
Brown - McClement - Ashton

Gunnarsson - Phaneuf
Gardiner - Ranger
Liles - Holzer
Kostka

Backstrom
Reimer

OK 1 of those picks is obviously ours, but how are you getting 2 other top 5-7 picks?

Because those players you're trading certainly isn't gonna do it

I hope it is true that ownership is not pushing Nonis to try and lang Luongo. That was my single greatest fear when Burke got axed at such a stupid time.

2nd. last
9th. last
5th. last

It might just be me, but that really looks like tanking.

There's a difference between tanking and having a poor/imcomplete team. Tanking = selling off your assets (for draft picks) to intentionally put a crappy team on ice in order to ensure high draft picks for consecutive seasons. Oilers, Hawks, Pens, etc.

I can't remember when that's happened on the Leafs.

For years I have felt like the Lunatics were running the Asylum.

These last few days have been refreshing to say the least that someone making decisions for this franchise understands common sense.

"Do it Right" - JFJ brought this to MLSE how many years ago? Finally some progress.

4. Trade for Roberto Luongo at the draft (Kadri, Bozak)
5. Sign Corey Perry, Paul Ranger and David Clarkson.

Going into 2013/14...

Perry - MacKinnon - Kessel
JVR - Grabovski - Kulemin
Komarov - Colborne - Clarkson
Brown - McClement - Ashton

Gunnarsson - Phaneuf
Gardiner - Ranger
Liles - Holzer
Kostka

Luongo
Reimer

My version is a little different.

1. Tank and draft BPA
2. Trade Connolly, CMac, Lombardi, Bozak, Steckel, Komisarek and Franson between now and the deadline for picks/very young prospects. Open negotiations with Lupul and if he doesn't reink by deadline deal him.
3. Gasp and hopefully this doesn't happen but even look at dealing Phaneuf, Kessel, Kulemin if they're indications that they wouldn't want to reink. Most likely we don't have to deal any of them before the summer
4. Acquire a goalie via free agency like Backstrom, Howard, Smith or via trade with high potential like a Markstrom, Holtby, Lehner, Bernier but on our trading terms. Not like what is going on with Luongo that would require giving up good assets.
5. Sign Ranger
6. Sign one of the top free agents
7. Most tradeable pieces with value in the summer in a package deal will be Kadri, Gunnarson, Kulemin and picks that aren't our first. It'd suck to loss these guys but if we could get say a Patrick Sharp or other 4 to 6 million dollar player that is a high end 2nd liner we have to give something up
8. Spend to the cap
9. Plan on Rielly and our 1st pick making the team next year

the only problem I have with tanking is I'm not sure how low we can go.

I cant see this current team going below the 5th overall pick, which may mean a player that wont be ready for a while. We need a 1st overall to get a player that's ready really soon.

Honestly i dont know what to expect, there are multiple options, if you go the Luongo route, it means drafting mid-round this year and trading for a #1 C in the summer(or somehow getting one through UFA)

If you go the wait and see route, you could end up anywhere from 5th last to 8th place in the playoffs(because honestly which Reimer will we get?) There is zero guarentee we will fully tank if we go as is, there is definitely at least some solid talent on this team.

Nobody wants Connolly/Lombardi/Komi's Contracts. Just like we couldn't trade Armstrong and his 3M - but MTL picked him up at 1/3 the price. Same situation will apply here.

We have 3 Trade Chips right now.

1. Lupul - his value will NEVER be higher. - Personally I think he's useless - doesn't hit - has no size - lacks toughness - isn't a skilled offensive player - he's a defensive liability - he doesn't get along with our coach and vice versa - all in all he's a poor mans Scott Hartnell.

2. Kessel - again his value will never be higher ... expect his production to drop significantly without the help of Wilsons "DO WHATEVER YOU WANT WHENEVER YOU WANT" System ... expect problems with Carlysle to increase - as his icetime will be cut should he continue to not play defensive. All in all his time in Toronto has been a cake-walk - it will get sour very quickly. Trade him before you become desperate and HAVE to move him.

3. Kadri - Is he a 3rd line Grinding Defensive specialist? No - he was drafted to be a 1/2C ... can you be a competitive hockey team with Both Grabo/Kadri playing down the Middle? My money's on no. So trade him - his value will only drop watching him get frustrated burried on our teams 3rd line playing 12minutes a night and putting up 20-30 points. Move him for an asset you can utilize appropriately.

Just be patient. That's all Nonis has to do.

If there are no deals on the table, do nothing. He's under no pressure to make a move immediately and make his mark on this team. Certainly not.

This team, status quo, could finish in the bottom 5, or it could finish on the cusp of the playoffs. Let's not forget that for 60-odd % of last season this was a playoff team before the wheels fell off. While I don't THINK they are playoff team, it's a shortened season so anything can happen.

What management needs to do, is be patient, and see what we have.

Unless the Canucks are dropping Luongo into Toronto's laps, Nonis should steer clear.

Good news. I saw we tank one more year, rid ourselves of the excess fat on our team for picks and ascend next year.

The thing is that having a decent goalie and doing reasonably well this year might help us attract free agents more than sucking and getting a high draft pick would. Now if only we could get a decent goalie, do reasonably well, and trade someone to a crappy team for a first rounder...

I think the biggest thing is this IS a shortened season.

The normal season rules dont apply, even crap teams could make a run for the playoffs with a hot start. how many wins do you need, 25? 30?

a bottom team will fall FAST, if we come out losing 8 out of our first ten games, we're getting a high pick, you go 5-5 or 8-2 whatever, we could easily make playoffs.

So much wrong in this post. I can't respect the hockey opinion of someone who compares Lupul to a poor mans Hartnell.

Im really worried about what happens if we DONT get Luongo, or at least someone of his calibre.

If we dont get him, and Reimer/Scrivens both suck(which is very possible) wtf do you do? Because a big name UFA goalie wont happen(last one was craptastic bryzgalov) and a #1 G being available RARELY happens(Luongo and Halak being the last two that come to mind.)

So we'd basically be relying on pure luck, which could mean no playoffs for a few years.

people wanting to tank and trade Kessel and Lupul coming off all-star seasons is just dumb. We have 2 dynamic young snipers and all these sad sack leaf trolls can do is say we need to blow it up and start over. we can draft top 5 for the next 10 years and still never find a productive duo that comes close to Lupes and Kessel. lay off the drugs people .

Agreed 100%. I dont understand the strip the whole team and start over mentality some people have here.

One or two moves could flip this team into a winner, but some people here act like we have a team of useless garbage, thinking Kessel is only worth Oshie straight up:shakehead

Dave Nonis was interviewed this afternoon on Sportsnet (Fan 590) by Kypreos, Mallard and MacLean.

After the interview, the panel stated they did not get the impression that ownership was pushing Dave Nonis to make a push for Luongo and the playoffs. Kypreos stated that it seems like ownership is pushing Nonis to "do it right". They mentioned that it seems like the quality of talent in the 2013 NHL Draft is a big thing for ownership.

I really, really hope this is true. It's a short season, tanking will be relatively painless, and with no moves we should finish with a pretty high pick. The top of this draft is absolutely loaded, MacKinnon/Jones/Drouin/Lindholm/Barkov/Monahan would all be top 3 picks most years, and four of them are centres. This is a GREAT opportunity to get a young #1 centre, all we have to do is hold off on a goalie trade for 48 games (or however long this season is going to be).

On the other hand, this is the complete opposite of how MLSE has always acted, even when they're supposedly "fine with a rebuild." I'm more than a little sceptical that they won't push Nonis to make some headline grabbing move that will drive single season revenues.

Are you Leo from Vaughn that was just on the Fan 590? He echoed the exactly same thing you just said.

hard to say.

I mean ideally waiting until the summer to get Luongo would be perfect, but probably impossible, he'll be gone within a few weeks.

But that would be best case scenario, top 5 pick then getting luongo, and maybe even another free agent.

but lets not forget the possibilty of ending up with say the 10th overall if reimer plays decently, there are no guarentees in a short season. Unless you're Columbus.
