Luongo the first person to win their first cup after already being inducted into the HHOF?

Marcel Dionne.

edit: did he get this as an employee or just as a gift from the team?

He goes to work every day and is one of the top guys in the front office on the hockey side of things.
Ultimately, I don't think it matters what we think, though. His name's going on there.

Is he really a top guy in the office? He's not a president or a GM, an assistant GM or a head scout.

He's a "special advisor" I don't want to sound like a hater but it seems like his job is just to sit around and smile and do PR.

His name will go on there but it's not like he won the thing

From what I understand, he's been very influential on the team's goaltender scouting, coaching and development.

yep, ran into him at the prospects tourney that was in Raleigh a couple years back, he's heavily involved in the goaltending development for Florida. I mean is "special advisor" really all that different from "goaltender development coach" in this context? Would ANYONE have qualms with the later being on the Cup?

I had always heard of he was basically the director of goaltending, meaning oversees coaches, scouting, development etc when it comes to that position. He might know a thing or two about goaltending.

IIRC it was a gift of sorts, since he never won it as a player and the team wanted to give him a thank you for all of those years of high level play.

Weird stat, I researched it a bit and as far as I could tell Luongo may be the first person to have won their first cup as a manager after already being a member of the HHOF
Could've been Bondra, He's 500 goal scorer who isn't in the Hall. Started working for the club in 2017. Loved Bonzai.

I'm sure this has happened to more players in their post playing career than we even realize or can think of.

Cam Neely in the first reply being one of them.

I'm sure it's also happened to several head coaches in their post-coaching days, while they were just employed for a team as an executive of some kind.

Luongo never won a cup as a player.
Same as Steve Nash never won an NBA title.

That's great you won one in front office, but it's not the same at all not even close.

Special advisors can have very big roles. Steve Yzerman was a special advisor in Detroit for many years before becoming Tampa’s GM and he was very closely involved in every aspect of the Wings back then.

Yzerman was a vice president, I believe.

Brian Campbell for the Hawks is a role/title similar... yet he's considered a top guy in Kyle Davidsons FO
