Luke Schenn

A rash of right side injuries including both of Bogosian and Marincin (he's still around) then maybe he's one of several players to consider filling in a hole. Otherwise there's no need right now.

Back in 2008 my comment was, why are we drafting a guy who is going to be a journeyman level defenseman like Luke Richardson with a top 5 pick? Now he’s a dime a dozen veteran spare part. So the price and expectations would be different.

We drafted him, because most scouts believed he was an Adam Foote type defenseman. He didn't turn into that top pairing defenseman, but is a good 6/7 guy.

In hindsight, Schenn never had a high ceiling because his puck skills were so limited. I think they fell in love with his personality plus his mental and physical maturity. A teenager already strong enough to handle NHL forwards? A teenager they didn't have to worry about doing something stupid away from the rink? A teenager who genuinely listened to his coaching staff? They were dreaming of a Scott Stevens type of draft pick.

BTW, I think Luke Richardson was a much better player. 20+ years and 0 games in the AHL.

Yeah, I recognize that he's a historically awful pick for the organization but could have limited use had we picked him up today. A 5th overall pick you had to trade up for vs a waiver fee is very different level of investment in a guy.
