Loudest Arena? Quietest Arena?

The Jets stadium always seems crazy to me.

As a Canes fan, I think PNC is extremely loud, especially in the playoffs.

Having visited a number of other NHL arenas, I think shape has a lot to do with the perceived differences. For example, having visited Tampa and Vegas, both teams have fans that are just as into the game as our local Canes fans, but the lower level especially is a much shallower angle and seems more stretched out. This leads to more airspace and maybe makes it sound less intense? PNC is much steeper in the lower level, which helps funnel the noise into a much more compact airspace.

Vegas is just a whole different animal in terms of the event production.

Hello , do the broadcasts add fake crowd noises during broadcasts? I noticed that the live game feed crowd level does not match up with the highlights sound crowd and the sound on the replays

If anything, Sportsnet tones down the crowd feed and boosts the announcers'.

Mb just me, but I was surprised at how quiet Dallas was. Alot of the game I could make out the ice level talk. Know they were down, but in most playoff homes, I always feel there's a "buzz" that will go on thru lulls, I wasn't hearing it this game. Only noticeable times I heard them besides goals, were when devil child mark stone touched the puck lol

I am not, unfortunately. From what I remember Dallas has at least in recent times been one of the quieter arenas.

Plus I was just looking at ticket prices for the different playoff teams for Game 2/Game 3(was flying with nothing better to do). Dallas has the cheapest available tickets at $55.00 ( which is crazy given Dallas had the most points in the Western conference). The next cheapest is Florida at $60.00. Just shows the NHL playoffs just aren't a big deal down there right now.

You're half right. The differences aren't just perceived, but the physical layouts of buildings make a huge difference. Steeper bowls will result in lower overall (geometric) volume- less volume and the same amount of acoustic energy results in a louder arena. Lower ceilings make a big difference there as well, as well as the specific geometry. Some geometries magnify and concentrate sound, others diffuse it. Materials matter too, though in terms of arenas that's mostly at play in the roofs. Not much difference in seats and concrete seating bowls material-wise.

I'm sure plenty of teams have fans as loud as the Canes, but the reason PNC arena is so comically loud (seriously, I've been to plenty of games where for an hour afterwards my ears have been ringing, which can't be great for long term hearing- the older I get the more I think they should design arenas to dampen that noise somewhat) is largely because of the geometry. It's also a rowdy fanbase that gets plenty lubed up pregame, and while arenas with very corporate crowds don't have that, plenty of other teams have lubed up, energetic fans. It's the combination of loud fans and arena geometry that make the difference.

Certainly ain't piped in noise, I also went to games during the decade of darkness, and things were (and are) a lot quieter when we were getting blown out by bottom feeders.

The arena itself makes a massive difference. Old Rexall place in Edmonton was absolutely deafening. The crowd could drown out the PA system easily. The new building is so much more massive and the crowd noise doesn't come close to the same decibel level as the old one.


This was filmed with a potato but the crowd noise at 4::20 is just mental. Can't come close to that in the new building even with 1500 more people.

Quietest is always Toronto

Madison square gardens is the loudest I've been to and Key bank center or whatever it's called in Buffalo when they're playing the Leafs is a close 2nd.

Out of the arenas I've been to (NYR, NJ, CAR, TB, VGK), PNC Arena in Raleigh was by far the loudest. TV doesn't do it justice (arena ambience is really quiet on broadcasts in general, which drives me nuts). The goal horn is LOUD in person, one of the best in the league!

Last night PNC was about the loudest I've ever heard it get at the end. Place was already loud when Aho tied it up and it somehow ramped up even louder when Martinook scored.

Saw a guy on Xitter who managed to record the whole sequence. It went to crazytown in the lower bowl on the game winner



Even Mike Rupp said its the loudest barn he's ever experienced

Not sure. But Sportsnet turns down the volume of lots of canadian crowds to make Leafs fans feel less insecure about their quiet barn.

UBS is 1000x better than MSG during the playoffs and I’ve been to games in both. UBS has similar acoustics to Nassau Coliseum.

Yea dude, 100% sold out all year and 100% sold out all playoffs. Get Canadian teams to do that, oh wait they cant.

As for the broadcast, ESPN mutes the crowd noise. For example, the Mark Stone getting boo'd clip.. you can barely hear the boos on the broadcast but IRL Stone couldn't focus/hear the question...

You sure about that one? You mean the one game 2 seasons ago where you played against a blueline of Scott Mayfield and Bridgeport. That must be when Rangers fans drown the Isles out. Then again you’re still telling yourself that those Rangers fans who appear at UBS are true fans because the stained DHGate Lundqvist jersey they find in the back of the closet said so. The same ones who show up drunk looking to fight instead of watching a hockey game and used to get dragged down the stairs of the Coliseum by security.

Outside of a playoff game in Vegas, the only other arena I've seen a playoff game is Crypto. I think it'll be dead quiet in LA if they play anything like game one.
