Losing games on purpose in international tournaments

Why win a game if its going to hurt your case? Why judge a team for not winning a game if its going to actually hurt their case?

Seems like strategic thinking to me.

If losing allowed Canada an easier path to Gold, I would fully support it.

I would never support that. Winning a tourney like that would be way worse than losing it.

This is just a sport. Winning by any means possible does not belong there.

My guess is that 99% of your fellow Canucks would NOT. Seriously, give ur head a shake. Unlike in Sweden, Canadian Media would have a field day, and offending coaches + players would never hear the end of it.

A team in a TC UNI losing on purpose???

NO WAY, NO HOW !

It's part of sports. The NBA just did this year. Brooklyn flopped the last game so they could matchup against the Toronto Raptors in the 1st round and last night they beat them in game 7. People thought Brooklyn flopping would fire up Toronto to beat them, but it didn't go that way. If you can lose a game to improve your odds, why wouldn't you do so? Like any decision, if it works, you are brilliant. If it doesn't work, you look stupid.

Controversial for fans !
a bit like the "let's tank" attitude !

If you don't have that concern, it is fine. Now if you have to please your fans !! that is not correct toward them !!

We (when being a kid and in a soccer team) did this in a tournament far from our home. It worked ...
We ended up 2nd, loosing to the team we avoided in SF. They were a soccer/school ... lot's more training. We had almost no chances.

I don't care. If they want to do that all the power to them, seems smart to me, get the easiest road possible, if that includes losing intentionally then so be it.

Like the 2004 UEFA Euro, Denmark/Sweden drawing 2-2 would ensure both teams make the quarters regardless of what Italy did. Then the game resulted in a 2-2 final.

If they did try to play to a 2-2 draw to the benefit of both teams I'm fine with that.

Only thing is that its illegal.

yeah well the authorities might care about it but I don't. Plus it's fairly difficult to prove.

I can't believe how some Swedes are still trying to whitewash the stunt they pulled in '06. Sure, it's wasn't a honorable thing to do, but it worked in your favor, so just grow up and admit it.

To be the man, you gotta beat the man!

To win the tournament, your going to have to play the best teams anyway. Why not rise up to the challenge? You'd probably play that team better going in with that mentality than meeting them later on and being apprehensive about it.

Nothing has been as egregious as the Germany-Austria event in the FIFA World Cup.

How about sweden-Denmark 2-2 2004? It's pretty much the same. They end up in that result much later in the game so it isn't so obvious, but it was as much preplanned result as Germany-Austria.

Finnish are stupid. They always try to win even if that means they propably going to lose the elimination game. To swedish it isn't problem to lose games if it means easier path to gold. Finnish people are too honest.

Spain - Chile 2010 WC did the same, both played even and would make it the next round, the last 10 or 15 min in the game the ball was only in the midfield, no shots on goal.

The first one I come to think about involving Sweden is neither -94, -04 nor -06.
It is -09, 1809, when we tanked the war with Russia...

Not true at all.

Yup. IF Sweden lost to avoid Canada in 2006, good for them.

Actually, the swedish team 2006 were great on paper but horrible on the ice. Watching them was painful, simply awful. The game they lost versus Slovakia(?) was just embarrassing, such a poor showing of sportsmanship.

The Finnish team was amazing, played great hockey and was the team of the tournament. Sweden got to the final and won, and we all just remember Sweden as the best team. For us who watched this Swedish team and the tournament that was not really the case. We won, winning is great, but the game vs slovakia gave it a bad taste.

Finland was great that Olympics and deserved to win. Thats the simple truth, but sometimes sports arent that fair. I have huge respect for Selänne, Koivo et all, they ruined our Olympics in Nagano and they deserved to win the final 2006.

As much as I see Finland as our no1 rival, I do respect and admire their way of hockey. Full of skill, loads of speed and the most important thing of all, their ability to lose to Sweden when it really matters! :naughty:

Did you even watch that game?

It was like a fight for almost 90 minutes and then Sweden scored, and then everybody really didn't try for like 1-2 minutes afterwards...the 2-2 goal was scored in the 89 minute.

But Italy could not get over the fact that all other countries aren't as corrupt as they are.

The result was clearly not agreed beforehand but when the result was perfect for both teams with less than a minute to go, they didn't rush down to score and thereby risking a counter attack.

Oh, and Italy should never be allowed to talk to anybody about match fixing.

All that being said....If the swedes want tomorrow game to finish 2-2, im sure we would allow that to happen.....Maybe just stop scoring on us after 2 goals?:P
