They’re better than last year, but by how much?
Through 71 games this season, the Rangers have 99 points and a league-best plus-54 goal differential. Through 71 games last season, the Rangers had 80 points and a goal differential of plus-13. That alone suggests dramatic improvement.
The Rangers are just an average possession team this season, with a Corsi for percentage of 50.3 percent. That’s actually down from last season’s 52.4 percent. Since the trade deadline, the Rangers are even lower, at 46.9 percent.
They also have a league-high PDO -- the summation of shooting and save percentages, which is a proxy for "puck luck" -- of 101.9, inflated in part because of an even-strength save percentage of .933. But considering that Henrik Lundqvist and Cam Talbot are their two goalies, it’s quite possible New York will maintain that number. Last season, the Rangers finished No. 4 in the league in even-strength save percentage, at .931.
It’s the 8.7 even-strength shooting percentage that might be tough to maintain come playoff time. Last season, the Rangers finished No. 28 in the league with a shooting percentage of 6.7.
