Olympics: Looking for someone knowledgeable about 1980 Canadian Olympic Hockey Team

It’s not listed on his LinkedIn or any bio he has online. So he probably has kept that tidbit about him “unofficial” I.e. saved for bar conversations. Something that started before widespread adoption of the internet im guessing but he knows better than to list it anywhere official and be a verified liar.

There is something OFF here

43 in 2004?

I have also emailed his company asking what is going on. There are dozen of articles written on those games and his name has never been mentioned.

I think this is our version of Don't f*** with cat people
Ironically, HFBoards has a connection with that story too..

Looking at his educational background--I think he may have been THE STICK BOY. If he was the stick boy he can call himself an Olympian. Annoying I know
What makes you say that?

What makes you say that?

Just how something is worded or he could have been part of the accounting team. Why do I say that?
I was sent this as a reply to one of my emails. If he was part of the support staff? He participated in the Olympics. There is no clear definition. We assume it means you are an athlete but since IOC does not give it a clear definition?

He was the coffee maker.
The lawyers of Joe DiMaggio's estate want to speak with Mr. Gantz ...

Devil, Who emailed you back that reply?

Long story short. I emailed a couple IOC emails that I found and they explained the "What an Olympian is open for debate" and that it no longer just covers athletes. I covers administrators, Doctors and other staff

Nowhere in that article did it say that doctors, administrators, or support staff are considered olympians

That’s just them giving a non-answer so they don’t have to get intertwined in some thing about a random guy possibly lying about being an Olympian.

It looks like about 20 years ago they decided not to define what an Olympian for some strange reason

it does not define what an Olympian is as well
Yeah but the scope of consideration is clearly confined to athletes. E.g., whether the 12th man on a basketball team is considered an Olympian if they never play (they used to not get medals but they do now); the case of would-be athletes whose countries boycott the games, or athletes who attended the games as alternates in case of injury.

There’s really no case to be made that anyone connected with the games would consider “support staff” to be olympians.. even head coaches don’t get medals (hence tikhonov famously swiping Khudobin’s medal)

IMO the only realistic possibilities in this scenario are that the guy

A. was an alternate, or “practice only player” who was never rostered for any of the actual Olympic Games

B. played with Team Canada in some “friendly” competition, exhibition, scrimmage in the run up to the Games

C. Was on the team but subsequently changed his name

Or

D. Is making it all up

It’s worth noting that the article mentions it’s not uncommon for an obituary to note that someone was an Olympian, but that there is no other evidence of their having competed. Presumably most of those people fell into category “A”

Devil,

Still waiting for responses to my emails

Here is the thing. There is no evidence he ever played hockey at any level and that my curious.

if the mods want me to edit this I will--this is the response I got from the guys who are in charged of the Olympic history

DON'T f*** WITH THE CAT PEOPLE

Thank you for your request. According to this book The Canadian Olympic team at the XIII Winter Olympic Games : Lake Placid, New York 1980 / publ. par l'Association Olympique Canadienne avec la collab. de la Direction de l'Information du Plan des Jeux - Olympic World Library, there was no athlete or staff member called "Dwayne Gantz" in the Canadian Ice Hockey team for 1980. You will find attached an extract of this publication.

We also confirm that staff member of a delegation cannot be called "Olympian" this term is reserved for athletes.

Co-Worker sent me these off Co. website-
Can't make this $#@! up... here's Dewey competing at "Olympic Event" this past Summer to support tge United Way. Think he would've worn his 80' Team Canada Jersey to that!!!

I guess this guy just moved to America at some point, started telling people he was on the Canadian Olympic hockey team and people just believed it.

Damn this is a crazy one. Crazy because it's so easy for anyone with an internet connection to debunk. I don't know why people do these things. It's so cringe to lie about who you are in such a grandiose way.
