Looking for some help/assistance here. There's a guy I know who's claiming to be a member of the 1980 Canadian Olympic Hockey Team. I can NOT find him listed on ANY source as a member or even find him listed on ANY hockey team for that matter. his name is Dwayne "Dewey" Gantz. He has been telling people for decades that he played on Canada's 80 Olympic Hockey Team. Obviously I checked websites, rosters and even Canada Olympic page and found nothing. Here's a picture of him with a REAL Olympic/Paralympic Athlete at his current position in charge of finances for a major insurance carrier.

Looking to see if he was perhaps a sub or member of team in some other capacity. IF he's this dishonest about his past, thinking he should be called out on it. Thanks- Randy

Usually I can find a reference to even the most obscure player having played somewhere in college or juniors. Especially someone claiming to be on the Olympic team. So far all I’ve found hockey-related with him is his Walden dissertation about Sun Belt team revenues: https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=10635&context=dissertations

Based on the dates there he got his BA from Trinity Western in 1985 so he may have played for them but online rosters/stats don’t seem to be available that far back so someone would probably have to deep dive their yearbooks in the 1980-1985 range to see if he appears there as a player. That’s probably a good start. No idea what league he would have been in prior to college if he played there.

A case of stolen valor?

If he was truly on that team, then he would be on their roster. Maybe he was just a practice player?

I tried finding his collegiate team, as he claims he was a varsity player. I couldn't find anything either. Tried both UBC and TWC. Looked through archives, black and white photos, etc. His name does not come up.

I found his DOB and compared it with any national team player with a different name. No matches.

So he definitely did not play for Team Canada.
And maybe he never even was a hockey player.

The one thing that the olympics is good for is tracking people who participated or coached in the Olympics. He may have been support staff and nothing more. What I find interesting is that there is very little on-line about him

and according to the official Olympic sit only 3 people with the last name Gantz have been in either the summer or winter Olympics. I did find out he is Dr in Theology, so he may have a spiritual advisor to a person or team. Coaches, spiritual advisors get a "special" medal but it is not an official medal

Spiritual advisor would make the most sense.

It’s not listed on his LinkedIn or any bio he has online. So he probably has kept that tidbit about him “unofficial” I.e. saved for bar conversations. Something that started before widespread adoption of the internet im guessing but he knows better than to list it anywhere official and be a verified liar.

"Competed at the Olympics" had me looking at perhaps something other than hockey but that seems to not be the case either -

Athletes - Team Canada - Official Olympic Team Website (which you can search by year/location and he's not there either)

I think I am right with the spiritual advisor

But there is his holding a medal from a press thing a few days ago

Caption says he competed in the Olympics for Canada... that rules out everything but being an athlete

found this. There is no reference anywhere of him playing hockey at any level

IT is not the medal we are hyperfocused on it is him saying he was on team canada 1980. In several on line bios he says he played on team canada ice hockey 1980.I can not find any hockey stats on the guy.

I think he is playing word gymnastics with the word "competed". Spiritual advisors do no not compete.

Understood, other poster said the guy was holding up a medal claiming it was his though and that’s clearly not the case

I’d go ahead and reach out to his employer and ask why he’d lie about that. Not good to represent himself that way to real Paralympians.
It’s probably appropriate to say there is no evidence online to support his claim, I personally would stop short of calling him a liar though since that hasn’t been proven yet.

what I can not get. The 1980 Canadian team is one of those teams that were studies to death over the year and no one had of this guy before. Also, there are no hockey stats for this guy on ANY hockey stat board. It is not like some guy off the streets could walk on and play for the team. That is why I am going with spiritual advisor to the team

I think it is more likely that the guy exaggerated or flat-out lied
