The $.50 Pick 5 at Kentucky Downs paid $136,000 and that was with a favorite winning one leg and Irad Ortiz, Jr. winning two others.

Four jocks have a chance to win the riders' title as we head into the Kentucky Downs finale today.

  • September 11: I am not sure how many tracks recognized the despicable terrorist acts in 2001, but Monticello (NY) harness paused in tribute to the heroes and remember the fallen.
Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Race 9: Winterfell (Jevian Toledo/Brittany Russell), a $400,000 son to Arrogate trained five times in California by Bob Baffert, broke his maiden today at Parx under the direction of Brittany Russell.

Kentucky Downs (Kentucky):
  • Closing Day: Today completed the brief seven-day yearly event. Addictive lunacy as always being America's only European-style track.
  • Handle:
  • Leading Jockeys: Irad Ortiz, Jr. (9) and Tyler Gaffalione (9). Frankie Dettori and Jose Ortiz both rode eight (8) winners.
  • Leading Trainers: Brendan Walsh, Joe Sharp and Steve Asmussen all had six winners.
  • Tough Meet: Michael Maker sent out the most horses and yet had zero winners (0/44). Mark Casse was 0/24.
  • Race 10: Isle of Capri (Tyler Gaffalione/Brendan Walsh) won the closing race of the meet. The victory gave the jockey his fourth riding title in the past five years at the unique North American track. As stated a few times, he is the new Mr. Kentucky.
  • Race 9: Kathynmarissa (Frankie Dettori/Richie Dutrow) won the $1.5 million Dueling Grounds Oaks Invitational.
  • Race 8: Limited Liability (Frankie Dettori/Shug McGaughey) won the 2 1/16 mile $500,000 Nashville Gold Cup Stakes.
  • Race 7: Lute Warm (Florent Geroux/Brittany Russell) won at 4-to-1 for a fourth straight win in six career starts. Oh, and it's Brittany!
  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 5 paid $136,000 and that was with a favorite winning one leg and Irad Ortiz, Jr. winning two others.

Fair Grounds moved today's card to Sunday due to weather concerns. Sunday will be the finale of the quarter horse meet at the track.

Today could be the dimmest Thursday afternoon of the year with no New York, Florida or California and Kentucky going off at 5 pm. Delaware, two Ohio tracks and Indiana among others await.

Woodbine (ON) has a solid card on Saturday.

1726189901493.png

The dozen races on the Saturday card feature six graded stakes, including four grade 1 events. Of those grade 1 races, three carry Breeders' Cup "Win & You're" in status with the CA$500,000 Summer Stakes (G1T) awarding a fees-paid spot in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1T), the CA500,000 Natalma Stakes (G1T) providing a spot in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1T), and the CA$1 million Woodbine Mile Stakes (G1T) awarding a start in the Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T).

Belmont at Aqueduct (New York):
  • Opening Day: NYRA will run various meets at Aqueduct until probably some time in June.
  • Pick 5 Carryover: $323,000. Very attractive proposition.
  • Exotics Mania: The last six races had 25-to-1, 23-to-1, 13-to-1 (winner), 68-to-1, 43-to-1 and 29-to-1 (winner) hot the board.
  • John Velazquez hit-the-board with all three mounts: a win at 9-to-1, second place at 43-to-1 and third at 13-to-1.
  • Race 10: Misseliofwar (Dylan Davis/Emron Ibrahim) stunned the viewers at 29-to-1. The first-time starter gave the trainer his first win since May 2019, he has been dormant since this year. The $.50 Pick 4 paid over $30,000.
  • Race 9: Ori (John Velazquez/Michelle Nevin) placed at 43-to-1 in the $150,000 Winter memories Stakes. When was the last time Velazquez hit the board at 40-to-1+ at NYRA?! He also picked up the mount for Joel Rosario who won the race with his other scheduled mount.
  • Race 8: Autumn Glory (Katie Davis/Patrick Quick) finished third at 68-to-1 in a race in which the three Davis siblings rode.
  • Race 4: Cinderella's Cause (Jose Lezcano/Linda Rice) throttled the competition by 11+ lengths.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Friday in Maryland: That means the Russells find a way to win. Today it happened twice but in the finale U Know When U Know (Sheldon Russell/Brittany Russell), a first-time starter, won at 7-to-1 which is basically a 1000-to-1 for them or so it seems.

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Races 1 and 2: Irving Moncada, who entered today with 14 lifetime wins in North America, rode winners in the first two raced. Except for one mount last year, he has ridden exclusively in North America.
  • Race 10: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $88,000.

Los Alamitos (California):
  • Opening Day: The brief meet opened.

Todd Pletcher sent a $450,000 3-year-old colt from Saratoga to Laurel. In the gate at 1-to-5, out at 1-to-2. And then Brittany and Sheldon Russell happened. :thumbu:

Belmont at Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: $12.8 million
  • Race 10: Beautiful Love (Dylan Davis/Charlie Appleby) gave the Irish foal her first win on US soil (second try) among eight lifetime starts and she claimed the Grade 3 $350,000 Jockey Club Oaks Invitational.
  • Dylan Davis rode three winners. He shares the early lead at the meet with Kendrick Carmouche (4 wins apiece).
  • Manny Franco has a very odd-looking 17 1-3-7 record.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Card: Three stakes.
  • Race 3: Antietam (Mychel Sanchez/Todd Pletcher), a $450,000 colt shipping from Saratoga, was sent off at 1-to-2 in a second start, but was trounced by Tony Eclipse (Sheldon Russell/Brittany Russell) in a decisive 8-length victory.
  • Race 7: Audacious (Mychel Sanchez/Todd Pletcher) returned the favor from race 3 as he rarely stays down for long. Miz Sense (Sheldon Russell/Brittany Russell) was unruly and unseated the rider, but thankfully no injury resulted.
  • Race 10: Post Time (Sheldon Russell/Brittany Russell) destroyed the small field with an 11+-length win in the $100,000 Polynesian Stakes. Post Time, as has been stated, is my favorite active horse in North America and now sports a perfect 7 7-0-0 record at Laurel. Post Time ended a 3-race skid and is now 13 9-2-2 and within a whisker of earning $1,000,000. Not too bad for an $85,000 purchase. "MAKE THE CHECK PAYABLE TO.....POST TIME," another great call by Dave Rodman, the best in the biz.

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Card: 11 races of which eight were $100,000+ purses including three graded stakes.
  • Race 7: Musical Mischief (Edgar Morales/Michael McCarthy) won the Grade 2 $400,000 Locust Grove Stakes.
  • Race 8: La Cara (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen) won the Grade 3 $300,000 Pocahontas Stakes which is the official opener to the 2025 Kentucky Oaks season. The favorite Kimchi Cat (Tyler Gaffalione/Tom Amoss) was pulled and finished last.
  • Race 10: Jonathan's Way (Joel Rosario/Phil Bauer) won the Grade 3 $300,000 Iroquois Stakes in gate-to-wire fashion as the favorite. Jonathan's Way, foaled in Ohio and the official leader on the 2025 Kentucky Derby leader board, is up against history. Only one horse foaled in Ohio has won the Derby and that was Wintergreen in 1909. This is the opening race to the 2025 Kentucky Derby season.

Louisiana Downs (Louisiana):
  • Race 7: Uno Mass Bourbon (Francisco Arrieta/Ian Wilkes) won the $250,000 Super Derby. The 3-to-1 shot was the favorite in a loaded field.

Lone Star (Texas):
  • Race 1: A mind boggling payout as the winner returned $118.40/$120.40/$23.60. Yes, the place figure is accurate and more than the win bet; still, that could very well be the largest price in the middle I have seen.
  • Race 2: The $2 double paid over $867 and that was with the prohibitive chalk winning. Imagine a simple all/6 wager. At a $2 base, the $20 total would have returned more than 860 clams.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Card: A powerful card with six graded stakes among 12 races.
  • Handle: $13.3 million.
  • Race 5: And One More Time (Rafael Hernandez/Mark Casse) won the $500,000 Grade I Natalma Stakes at 16-to-1 and earned a ticket to the Breeders' Cup.
  • Race 6: Fashionably Fab (David Moran/Kevin Attard) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Ontario Matron Stakes.
  • Race 7: Full Count Felicia (Kazushi Kimura/Kevin Attard) won the Grade I $750,000 E.P. Taylor Stakes.
  • Race 9: New Century (Oisin Murphy/Andrew Balding) won the Grade I $600,000 Summer Stakes and earned a ticket to the Breeders' Cup. It was the colt's first attempt in North America soil.
  • Race 10: Win for the Money (Patrick Husbands/Mark Casse) won the $1,000,000 Grade I Woodbine Mile at 13-to-1 and earned a ticket to the Breeders' Cup. Casse had three horses run in this particular race and finished 1-2.
  • Race 11: Patches O'Houlihan (Sofia Vives/Robert Tiller) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Vigil Stakes. Patches sports a remarkable 12 10-0-0 record, all at Woodbine of which two races were on turf (one win, one loss). Vives said the horse is "a beast" while Tiller labeled the horse "a freak of nature."

Hastings (British Columbia):
  • Race 5: August Rain (Amadeo Perez/Barbara Heads) won the Grade 3 $125,000 British Columbia Derby. This is one of just three graded stakes in Canada outside of Woodbine.

Leopardstown (Ireland):
  • Card: Nine races of which three are aligned with the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series.
  • Race 2: Green Impact won the $165,000 Group 2 Kpmg Champions Juvenile Stakes.
  • Race 4: Porta Fortuna won the $441,500 Group 1 Coolmore America 'justify' Matron Stakes.
  • Race 5: Economics won the $1,380,500 Group 1 Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes.

going back to dylan davis. he's still riding real well. he's also picking up mounts from trainers that appear to have never used him before. in fact, he rode for someone his father robbie never rode for: bob baffert.

it would be nice to see him get some live mounts over at the breeders' cup, especially from trainers not named clement and casse.

Curragh (Ireland):
  • Card: Five Group I racees including two Breeders' Cup Challenge Series races valued at the U.S. equal of $441,500.
  • Race 3: Lake Victoria punched a ticket to the Breeders' Cup by winning the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes.
  • Race 4: Bradsell won the Group 1 Bar One Racing Flying Five Stakes.

Belmont at Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 1: Lavender Disaster (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown) and Competitive Market (Manny Franco/Chad Brown) gave the trainer a 1-2 finish with two first-timers in the opening race. The latter cost $410,000 which is on the pricey side for astute owner Seth Klarman. The winner is owned by Peter Brant, via private means.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. rode three winners.
  • Lane Luzzi rode two winners, one at 24-to-1 and the other a rare chance for him on the post-time favorite.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Final Day of the Meet: $212.5 million bet at the New Jersey oval, an increase of $7 million from last year. The $4,251,965 average handle is a 5.4 percent increase from 2023. It is the fourth straight year of handle increases. Structural additions and improvements are ongoing. On-track handle was up almost 4%. Monmouth is one of the most attractive facilities in the land. Meadowlands has been in a success story with the standardbreds and later this year that track hosts the brief all-turf meet.
  • Leading Jockey: Paco Lopez, who else. It was his 10th title in the last 12 years and 11th overall.
  • Leading Trainer: Claudio Gonzalez which marked his third title in succession.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 1: Be Inspired (Sheldon Russell/Brittany Russell), a $575,000 colt owned by Mike Repole, made a debut and looked good in an easy spot. The hot trainer had won seven times with her past 15 starters.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 10: Thoughtthatcounts (Luan Machado/Michelle Brafford) gave the trainer her ninth win of the year which tied her career yearly best. She has been active since 2004. Brafford trained Roses for Debra in that filly's first five starts in 2022, including three wins in four starts, a loss via DQ at Presque Isle (PA) and then a disappointing fourth at Keeneland (KY) before a barn switch to Christophe Clement and multiple graded stakes wins.

Good article about Post Time and the connections but 1-to-20, almost incomprehensible.

Facing a significantly easier bunch than he did in a pair of million-dollar, Grade 1 races at Saratoga, the 4-year-old son of Frosted toyed with overmatched rivals in such a way that it will be hard to keep Post Time out of another big race in his next start.
That test would likely come on Nov. 2 at Del Mar in the form of the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. No commitments have been made yet for Posty, as they call him, but it would seem a very logical spot for a horse who has become simply too good for the local competition.
Sent off at prohibitive 1-20 odds under the trainer’s husband, rider Sheldon Russell, Post Time was content to sit back in last in the field of five through the early stages.
-----

In the two very solid performances at Saratoga the unheralded Maryland-bred finished ahead of a slew of established runners like White Abarrio, Hoist the Gold, Blazing Sevens, Disarm, Skippylongstocking, National Treasure, First Mission, Bright Future and Charge It.
The best horse in Maryland by a long way, Post Time runs for the top trainer in the state as well. A former assistant for several big-name trainers, Brittany Russell is a rising star in the game.
Out on her own since 2018, the young trainer led Maryland in victories and money won last season. With nearly $8 million in purses in 2023 and 177 wins, Russell was in the top 20 nationally in both categories.
