London Knights 2024 - 25 Season Thread, Part VII

Find me another goaltender, that ever better this in CHL hockey, this is not being lucky 48 times, this is skill and talent. He may be signed to a NCAA contract, but watch for NHL GMs to come knocking at his door soon.
While not quite as impressive as Elliott, the Moncton Wildcats goalie is 26-1 on the year after moving from the USHL. Took his first loss on the season the other day in the Q finals.

I read you here !

Rudy Guimond has done really well in Moncton since he joined them. However, there are two things that set Elliott apart from Guimond, he has good numbers in two strong CHL leagues. Guimond play in much weaker leagues this season in QMJHL and USHL, his real test will be against London and possibly Medicine Hat.

Elliott played well. Good for him. He shit the bed the last two playoffs on stacked teams but this year he managed to shake off the playoff jitters and win. 3rd times a charm!
He wasn't the starting goalie on that Saskatoon team last year in the playoffs.

He most certainly was. He started game one of the playoffs and let in 4 goals on 20 shots for the loss. Because Gardiner had a strong year, they made the switch for Game 2. Had Elliott been the anchor he should hav been to start the playoffs, he wouldn’t hav lost his net for the 2nd year in a row. Elliott had 43 starts that season for a 29-8-3 record and 2.39 .904. Situationally speaking, Gardiner/Elliott were in the same boat as Medvedev/Elliot this year with the Knights. An impressive 17 year old rookie goalie backing up a strong veteran goalie.

IMO, that early switch was made because Elliott had a poor playoffs the year previous. Sort of a “short leash” scenario.

As an OA goalie with incredibly impressive regular seasons stats over the previous two seasons, he was waived through the league and wound up in London. Good for him and I am happy it all worked out for both him and the Knights but no one can suggest there was zero risk involved in that Knights decision. Had there been zero risk, Elliott would not have been waived through the WHL. Clearly there were teams in that league that passed on him specifically because of the same issues I presented at the time.

The question I had at the time was whether it would be a better strategy to replace Elliott with an OA skater because Medvedev was so strong and/or they could potentially have targeted a veteran non-OA goalie to help back up Medvedev. Maybe someone like Bowen. IMO, that was the better strategy. It all turned out positive though which is good for the player and team.

I watched on TV because I live 12 minutes to work in St Thomas for 11 PM. Tried to take a holiday and there was already senior personnel booked off because of long weekend. Would have gave my right arm and left nut to be there but I was there in spirit. Was great to see both Denver and Landon dressed. Sim’s goal was a back breaker for Oshawa. What hustle Monty had on that one. This team and last years team were great to watch. I noticed all the prospects on the ice with their suits on and OHL Championship Hats. The process for next championship has already started. They get to learn from the best and get the first hand knowledge of what a championship team is about. 👍to Hunter boys for starting them off early. On to Rimouski and Memorial Cup.

Congrats to the Knights there ain’t nothin finer then to be a London Knight fan at this time of the year! Me thinks we may be a couple seasons out for a return as of course we will lose some big pieces this year. BUT let the kids play and develop and get us back to the promise land!!!

I don’t think we can call the gamble a “payout” quite yet. He has 4 games to go and the 4th one is a one game take all. The type of game where 1 or 2 average goals against can become huge. Still has some work to do imo let’s just say “so far so good” on the Hunters roll of the dice!

Well, thats just greedy.

Either the goalie helped the cause or the team was strong enough where the goalie is/was inconsequential. Either way, the answer is in the books. Whether the Knights win the Memorial Cup or not is irrelevant to the initial conversation around the deadline. Elliot performed and was able to shake off two previous playoffs where he was replaced in net by the backup. That’s a positive regardless of the Memorial cup outcome.

I read some of the comments prior to last night's game about how they hated their coach and how awful he is. I thought that was crazy. BUT....with 3:52 left in the game there was no effort....nothing. Oshawa had plenty of opportunities to pull the goalie again but instead they did nothing. I just don't get it. I didn't want to post about this last night but after re-watching the game today I was absolutely shocked. I feel bad for the Generals. The coach should have called a time out...pumped up the kids and tried pulling the goalie again. Take a chance....a loss is a loss weather you lose 5-2 or 6-2. I know I'd be very disappointed if I was a Gens fan.

I totally agree, I said that last night to the people around me. There's still lots of time left and the coach has just given up, yes the odds of a comeback are low, but at least try. I was shocked, like you say, a loss is a loss, doesn't matter if its by 3 or 4 goals.

Yeah, I was also surprised the goalie wasn't pulled after the 5-2 goal. The team seemed to just give up and perhaps in part because the coach seemed to have given up. Had the situation been reversed I doubt Dale would have approached the situation that way.

Congratulations to the Generals for a great season and playoff which, in many other years, would have resulted in the trophy. They ran into a juggernaut in a very determined Knights team. I thought it was very classy Oster shaking the officials' hands after the game knowing it was his final game in the league.

Congratulations to the Knights players and staff. We have seen so many great players and have experienced so much great hockey over the past 20 year that sometimes we can be a bit complacent. Not last night ! That was one of the loudest games I have been to in the Hunter era. Well done London fans!

We want the Cup!

I was shocked as well. He gave up on his team. You could hear it in the Post Game 4 presser where he essentially said he gave up any hope of them coming back that game during the 2nd intermission of that game. Wow! just Wow! And then to not pull the goalie to try and get a quick goal with less than 4 minutes left. AND... to just skate around and pass the puck back and forth during a delayed penalty call with about a minute left. Horrible coaching. I thought the Gens last season's coaching during the finals was bad, but this was another level.

It's real, and it's spectacular

Does anyone know, what the rules are for Fighting in Memorial Cup? I know last year, it was OHL rules, I just didn't know if because they are in the Q this year, if it changes to Q rules where you get tossed for fighting. Not that it will be a big part of it, just curious.

Once a Ranger, always a Ranger!!

I’ve said it on here before in the past. I remember going to Ranger games as a preteen and really liking the kid line that included Dale Hunter. They were the energy line on a middling team that year and I remember not being able to wait for them to get back on the ice again.

I still remember the trade to Sudbury. I couldn’t understand it. In our household, I still remember the cursing that went on by my dad. He was a big Ranger fan and a big Dale Hunter fan.

That still has to rank today as one of the worst trades in Ranger history.
