London Knights 2024 - 25 Season Thread, Part VII

The last couple years the Knights play on the road has been remarkable. Probably coaching.. but we play more relaxed and the reason London losing a 7 game series wont happen is road play. I give Halts credit for wanting to come back to London to finish this Mem Cup year off. We are playing very good for missing our best player....most teams are screwed losing their captain.

Fair question. Boulton is stuck on the 4th line and gets few shifts, few minutes per game. In the playoffs, he hardly sees the ice, and that's my preference. His role is limited mostly to "enforcement", the "tough guy" persona/act, and the players seem to like him and appreciate the passion he brings. You have to have a couple of players in the lineup who add toughness.
Or a messenger, as it was last night with 3–4 minutes left, a special delivery message sent by Dale to Malone that he too can play the game that way. ;)

Who is turek?

Also why would Simpson leave? Either way he’s the heir to Mark here
Knights are a family business from the front office to behind the bench, sometimes even on the bench. Can get tricky if you're not family.

Why wouldn't he leave? Don't get me wrong, I am sure he is in a great position with the Knights and great relationship with Mark/Dale. But, as long as Mark is around and wants to be, he is the GM of the team. There is no path forward for Simpson in London. He is still quite young as far as exec's go and if he has ambitions to be in the NHL one day as an exec, he will never get noticed in London being the second hand to Mark.

I am sure, Mark will not hold him back from elevating his position either, as far as I am concerned, if that is what he wants to do. Good for him! He has earned the right to explore those opportunities, 16 loyal years to London, in many different roles and you can't fault a guy for wanting to improve himself.

Just curious, if teams hire gms from other teams, do they give compensation or no?
I'm pretty sure there's a mechanism in sports where you can trade coaches for consideration (picks/money) but it's very, very unlikely unless it's a win win for both parties. For example, a coach is upset where he is but the team isn't going to fire him. Another team really covets that coach and offers a draft pick to nudge the other team to get rid of him.

That said, 99.9% of the time the answer is no but the GM is likely getting a higher compensation package or there's a compelling reason like moving closer to family for them to jump ship for a lateral move for the same position in the same league.

Update on Denver Barkey…

“How is London captain Denver Barkey doing with his ankle injury? “Getting close (to a return),” associate GM Rob Simpson said. “He skated without a yellow (non-contact) jersey the last couple of days.” Barkey has been with the team in Oshawa to provide leadership in the room . . .”.

Why wouldn't he leave?
The only surprise for me if he does leave is why has hung around this long? I assumed he was not that interested in pursuing a GM role anywhere else as IMO he should have left several years back? Perhaps the OHL has been involved and have chosen him as someone to bring respectability to a team that has no sense of professionalism in its ranks?
If he goes I wish him great success but he is going to have to remember London is not a typical OHL Team. The benefits the Knights enjoy are not available in most OHL cities. Correct the Hunters would never hold anyone back. That includes star players as well. Ask to get out and out you shall receive.
