Average age of London Roster is 18.14, Average age of Kitchener roster is 17.80 so almost identical. So yes whatever makes them feel better about thereselves haha.
Average age vs quality of vets.
Teams that go all in always have multiple high end 19 year olds on their roster. Some they already had. Some they trade for at high costs.
This year, Kitchener, in a rebuild / stand pat year have on their roster, two quality 05’s. Andonovski and Pridham while they dealt away their best 05 Carson Rehkopf. They traded for no high end 05 at the deadline (or any other high end player of any age for that matter).
By high end I’ll say:
high end = NHL drafted.
London has 7 NHL drafted 05’s.
Oshawa has 5 NHL drafted 05’s.
Barrie has 4 NHL drafted 05’s.
Oshawa and Barrie are contending teams who went all in trading multiple high end picks and youth for high end vets. Heck, Barrie traded for North Bay’s entire top line from last year. Oshawa did the opposite of the Rehkopf trade when they dealt for Barlow. Both teams made multiple trades. Both teams traded away their 1st rounders.
London, already flush in high end vets, traded for WJC cut Cam Allen. Thats a pretty good player.
Which, of the final four teams went all in at the deadline? All but Kitchener. Rangers were in sell mode and likely would have continued at the deadline if not for the surprise Pridham and Humphreys signings. Those signings, and the performance of the COTY, had this team standing pat due to their position in the standings and the weak western conference.
When you figure the average age of the roster, you have to look past the straight numbers but at the quality of veterans, specifically 19 year olds.
Kitchener was never really winning this series. We all know that. There was hope that Parsons could steal a game or two max. London hasn’t faced an all in team yet in these playoffs. They pretty much have an easy run to the final in a weak western conference. That’s due to as much quality of opponent as quality of team.
But things will change in the final. That’s where they’ll run into a genuine, top flight, all in team. A team built for a long playoff run this year.
The wins won’t be so easy to come by in the final. I’m not saying they’ll run into a brick wall, but they’ll meet genuine competition for the first time this year and it’ll show.
Looking forward to six or seven games.
