Lol the straws people grasp at. The nachos were nowhere near Thompson and we're thrown long before the goal was scored ffs

They were pretty directly in the path of the pass across from Draisaitl to Perry. I don't think people are grasping at straws, just pointing out it's 1) very funny and 2) kind of strange that the refs didn't blow the play dead after fans threw something on the ice.

I guess the way I’d look at it is the nachos were sitting on the ice, shouldn’t distract the defending team and if you blow the play dead you take a scoring chance away from offensive team. Perhaps they look at it similar to a defending player getting hurt…don’t blow the whistle until the defending team gets possession. It’s not an automatic whistle, ref would judge whether it interferes with play and it looked to only be an issue for Oilers….until the puck goes in the net of course

End of day, doesn’t matter, but it was more of an issue for Edmonton. I know the littlest distractions can annoy goalies, but to me, that’s just an excuse for the goalie, looking for something to blame other than himself. I’m sure I’d feel different if that was the difference in the game leading to an Edmonton win though

I mean... it's an viable excuse. The play should have been whistled down. But i mean... didn't you read the article?

"I've never seen that before. Obviously, I've got to play to the whistle. That one's on me," said Thompson, who made 30 saves in the win.

Idk I think it sets a bad precedent that fans can directly impact the playing field for a portion of the game. This seems like the exact kind of scenario where the league would want to take it out of the refs' discretion and just set a standardized rule for.

Yes, which is exactly why the whistle should have been blown. Both benches were yelling about that too so it's not like the refs didn't notice that.

Are you for real? Nachos on the ice shouldn't distract defending team?

Of course it can, it just didn’t look like it in that particular example

Weird that this is not a rule to begin with. Maybe they change it now? Thay can do it pretty fast too, remember when those two guys fought (I can't remember who) and took the other one´s helmet off and not their own, they didn't get a penalty because it was not against the rules, they fixed the loophole immediately.

That would be too easy to manipulate.

So as a Capitals fan, all I have to do is put on a Rangers Jersey and throw stuff on the ice and the Rangers potentially get screwed?

I get that it's haha nachos, that's funny, and that ultimately the Caps won anyway. Yet this is pretty clearly a play that should have been called dead by the officials.

Throwing anything onto the playing surface isn't permitted, especially during play. If you're in Nashville and they throw a 20lb catfish on the ice, they'd blow the play dead and the PA announcer would issue a warning. Same thing if an octopus hits the ice in Detroit. If it's game seven of the Stanley Cup Final and McDavid is streaking down the ice in Sunrise, FL, and plastic rats start pelting the ice, the play should be called dead (and, arguably, the Panthers should be penalized or warned that this will be the result if it happens again).

When does it go from "absolutely not" to "well, I guess that's ok then?" Is it when the item meets a certain humor quotient? A 10-ton safe is totally not OK, but neon green vibrators/yellow rubber duckies/whoopie cushions/waffles/rubber chickens are totally cool? They're funny and therefore by the transitive property of "good one!" this meets some nebulous turn-a-blind-eye threshold? Seems random.

I'm going to need a list from the league. What are the things I can throw onto the ice during play with impunity? I don't want to throw the wrong thing.
