I gather you mean making Matheson look good by improving his play, and not by comparisonIf Mailloux ends up making Matheson look good, you know you got a keeper!

I can see Reinbacher,or Mailloux, making the teapot of camp next season, but definitely not both. There's no way we insert two rookie RHDs to start next season!
We start the year with Matheson - Carrier, Guhle - Hutson and one of Xhekaj, or Struble, on a pairing with one of Reinbacher, or Mailloux.
By Christmas, the RHD not called at the start of the season should get the nod to step up to the NHL.
By the deadline, one of Matheson or Xhekaj get traded, depending on what positions we filled in the offseason and on what either player can garner in trade.
I'd actually really want to see pairing of Xhekaj-Mailloux as a 3rd pairing to start next season. I think the two can have good chemistry together.
With another 25-40 games in Laval, Reinbacher should be ready to step up to the NHL alongside Hutson and he couldplay a safer defensive game to start off, with less expectations and pressure to perform as an all-around D right from the get-go.
Very different players. Mailloux is more physical, much heavier shot. Not as great a skater - not as agile.
Barron has (had?) a serious confidence problem and doesn't seem to have high hockey IQ. Mailloux has the confidence, IQ still has to be proven, but he mostly lacks experience IMO.
The other side of that opinion is if you trade him, you will regret it.Trade him before it's to late, we will regret it.
He has NOT outplayed Reinbacher. He has played more games though.Dude gets no respect, he’s outplayed our 5th overall wonderboy the last two years, stays healthy, he’s tough, booming shot.. but you know.. he sucks right?

I’m saying this because Logan is universally trashed on this forum and he’s been greatI never understand why some Hab fans do this, why pump up one and trash another, they are both Hab prospects and we should all want the best for all of them. I was not a fan of picking either at the draft, but I support both fully. Mailloux has played 135 games for Laval, Reinbacher 21, why would you compare when the other is such a small sample size.
Mailloux clearly has impressive offensive upside, have been saying so since I started watching him but he is flat out dumb with his decision making and at times he is lazy and just gives up on plays which is total bullshit and I would have benched him for a week when he does that shit. But not everyone has seen every game of his.
Reinbacher looks better defensively and his ppg so far isn't too far behind as Mailloux's career AHL ppg is .59, Reinbacher's is .48

Perhaps. But the flip side is also possible: that the more he plays, the more his weaknesses will be exposed and the lower his market value will become.Mailloux will play in the NHL and his value is inherently high just because he's a RHD with good size and mobility. The more we keep him the more his value will increase.
Do not trade yet, if at all.
The Habs have two promising big RD prospects and I hope they both reach their potential.
Mailloux has taking huge strides during this playoff run and Reinbacher is steady every shift he plays.
Development of young players has alot twists and turns for sure.they do but to me you have to look at the entire season, as it's only been 6 playoff games so that's a small sample size. I like that this year the goals per game were up and he showed slight improvement in his defense. He had a drop in overall production but I hated how they handled him with the he's on PP1, he's off PP1, he's back on PP1, he's off PP1 again, repeat several times. How they thought putting Hoefenmayer over Mailloux on PP1 made zero sense to me. I know it was said they were trying to get him to work on his defense but how they handled just didn't make sense to me, in the end it only matters if it works though so we'll see when he gets more NHL games next year.
It's unfair to make a full assessment on one shift of a player who has just been called up. As someone who watches just about every Laval game I can say that he has vastly improved since his pro debut in Laval last season.Perhaps. But the flip side is also possible: that the more he plays, the more his weaknesses will be exposed and the lower his market value will become.
For those who question my concerns, I would suggest that if you have the ability, re-watch the few games that Mailloux played with the Canadiens early this season. There was one game, I believe against the Islanders, when Mailloux was paired with Hutson, where the team was helplessly trapped in their own zone under a heavy forecheck for almost 90 seconds. Mailloux was sent back to Laval shortly after. Mailloux has trouble dealing with the forecheck at the AHL level. I hold little hope that somehow, at the age of 23, he will suddenly be able to be effective playing against the speed and strength of NHL players.
If the deal/return is good, I would trade Mailloux now and let some other team gamble on his hoped for needed development. After watching Mailloux closely for the past three years, I think that is a vain hope.
Just my thoughts as no one has the perfect crystal ball. If I did, I would have avoided my first two marriages.
That first part is just not true. Mailloux was Laval's best dman in the 1st round vs Cleveland and possibly Laval's best player.I personally think David Reinbacher has been Laval's best defenseman basically every game he's played in the AHL, and that he's much more pro-ready than Mailloux
