I think being a piece in a trade for a major top 4 RD acquisition is certainly a possibility
Mailman was the top of the Hughes list to make it this season. That is why he traded away Kova.

I damn sure Hughes is aware of what is going on in Laval and this regression must have some kind of core issue. He literally looks like he just came up from juniors.

Last night game, I can't understand why he doesn't move fast enough to close the hole in front of the net on the PK. I can't understand why he pinches with the fastest guy on both teams near the blue line and gets completely beaten. I simply don't understand what he is thinking and WHY he is thinking like that.

I slow down the motion to 25% to see if he's looking at something else which gives him pause...and nope, he simply doesn't see the obvious.

HE MUST make his game as simple as it can possibly be. Stop thinking pinches, stop thinking about going on offence. Worry about only one thing...keeping people from scoring. He has to play like how I ride. I take my bike out with the belief that everyone is going to make a mistake and kill me. So my head is on a f*****n swivel making sure that I know where every car on the eastern hemisphere is and heading.

It's not that every second of ice time was a disaster waiting to happen, but hockey is a lot of little things done constantly right. Mistakes are always going to be present, every player makes them, but the more he eliminates, the more reliable and important he becomes. He closes the gap and there is no goal. He doesn't pinch and he doesn't get beaten. That's just three second of decision in 20 minutes of ice time.

I don't know what to say....and I don't know what is going on in his head. I just hope he snaps out of this and slowly gets back to a player we all want him to be.

EDIT....and the best of all extra stupid things to do. Little X is covering for M and stays with the forward THEN he peels off his coverage, to leave his man wide open in front of the net. Literally skated away from the guy he was covering in FRONT OF THE NET. That is PEEWEE level of stupid. I'm glad I'm not coaching because I would bag skate him till his nuts dropped. Needless to say, I'm not impressed by some of our Laval rocket scientist.

He's still just 21. I wouldn't mind him spending this whole year in the AHL, a few short stints next year, and hopefully in2 years he could be in discussion to start as a regular. NHL rookie at 23 considering all the development time missed is just fine. Many players have started off in the NHL at 23 or 24 and become very solid players.

Would you sell high right now or keep him until he's 24-25 and you are sure of what he is? that's pretty much the dilemma. If you look around the league alot of #3-4-5's aren't kids
I'd hold for sure. His value isn't that high right now, but he COULD become a 20 goals/60 points defenseman with size that plays with an edge. His floor is low but his ceiling is still very high.

The Snake strikes again. People laughed at him when he said Mailloux was a tweener, and did not have top 4 potential.

Mailman is a bad nickname. I think we should call him Doc.

Mailloux has top 4 potential; the issue is the defensive IQ and the brain overall.

And plenty of people, myself included, have been highlighting this since his days with London.

Has anyone had a chance to watch Mailloux playing and share your thought with us ? I've heard that he's not doing so good. And I've had a few glimpses of him this season and I'm not impressed.

Dude.. His time in Loondon was what? 4-5 years ago? If the same problems that existed then exist now, I'd be pretty concerned. I was always against this pick cuz of optics but even now, he's getting passed by. That's not a good sign.

The kid put so much effort in being able to lace them up and yet... Hasn't showed much for it. I'd say it's concerning.

My guess is he will get one more season in the AHL with the Habs and after that... That's it. He could def get traded too for someone who doesn't have rocks for brains.

i've seen every game. At times he looks lazy and is clearly not very bright but there's been improvements in his game just a question of can he keep improving as he's got the shot so his offense isn't in question just the rest of his game.

4-5 years ago? Last year was his ROOKIE year as a pro.

Mailloux hasn't been great for Laval this season, but I'd say that he's been better in January so far than he was earlier on, after having lost his PP1 duties to a clearly more-effective Engstrom.

Last game against Wilkes-Barre I actually thought Mailloux was one of our steadiest defensemen in Laval. But then again the Rocket as a whole allowed something like 5 or 6 breakaways in the game (alongside a myriad offensive chances, Hoefenmayer and Gavin Hayes were especially bad) so that wasn't exactly a high bar to clear by any stretch of the imagination.

Overall I'd say that what has happened so far this season IS concerning for Mailloux given that stagnation or even regression can be attributed to his performance in the AHL.

But Mailloux's missed so much time already with injuries/sexual scandal that he was on an "extended timeline" from the get-go and this recent downwards turn for him has only lengthened that timeline a little bit.

Development isn't linear, and sometimes prospects have to fail/flail a bit before they start making headway. It just is what it is.

I am just speculating, but I assume they expected better improvement from him this season and he is slowly losing ground. With Hutson, the need for offensive D is very small and I think they prefer guys who can be reliable in defense. We clearly see the difference Carrier vs. Barron.
I think if they can include him in some trade package, they would not hesitate.

Flickr. Likes to share photos but also likes to flick the puck in the next on his day job. I'm kidding!

I personally expect nothing from him. I would use him as a trade asset this summer before he doesn’t have any value

Why not just let him stay hungry in the AHL for one more year? This is how you get the best out of him and if he gets all cranky and complacent because he thinks he deserves a NHL job, that's when you know his mindset is not in the right place and will never be the top 4D he can be.

Reinbacher is Matheson's potential replacement. However, Mailloux could be Carrier's replacement. This may or may not be another Barron situation but we just don't know. I say we stay patient.

He also said that Hutson was a "gadget player". He's more wrong than right. He's a couch scout like most here. He'll see the odd game when available to him.

Because his value won’t be as high next year.

With Hutson, we don’t need an offensive Dmen and I don’t see what would be his role here.

You don't know that. His value could increase or stay the same. Why do you think he goes backwards? Because of the Barron trade and Barron's lack of development? I think we need to be careful with comparing development paths.
